I am not complaining about hearing of the struggles of getting repayment, I'm sick of hearing about SUPER Storm Sandy (Just barely a Cat 1 before and no longer a tropical cyclone landfall) itself, not the aftermath. Property losses can be insured. Sandy is not even in the top 10 for death toll (72) whereas the top 5 storms killed over 1000 people each. The ones I see on the news are not rich people. It's people living in cars, shelters and other places till they get insurance money to fix the house. I would bet the mansion folks fared a lot better than the OP and 99% of the others.
Attention Homeowners - Buy Flood Insurance!!! It's cheap. Even if you are not in a flood zone (it's really cheap). Down here we can see sea level rise. High tides(sunny days) are higher. Measurably. And BTW Barry, I have psycho vision. I've got psycho vision! I can see Bull Sh!t.
The reinsurance moguls, the ones who have a major financial stake in property values of coastal mansions, resorts, and municipal infrastructure, ask them if they are sh!tting their pants. I'll bet they aren't saying "don't worry, it's a vast left wing conspiracy". Behind closed doors, they are telling big govt and big business to get ready. In public, they say drill baby drill. Talking out of both sides of their a$$es.
yep sis they will take your money and raise your rates based on the SLR data, but sell you snakeoil and say dont worry their favorite part is taking your money
I've just chugged a cup of cuban rocket fuel, and toked a bit of Cinderella X from Seattle. It's nice outside and as the tide drops, a thigh to waist high swell with offshores. Happy thoughts. I believe I can fly! Peace and waves boys and girls.
You are laughable, citing opinion articles that talk about INVESTIGATIONS and no hard facts. I am 100% sure that crooked adjusters conspired with crooked claims agents and committed fraud. This does no mean the Ins Co defrauding you, just dishonest employees. But I am also 100% certain that there were many claims that were denied (for good reason) due to pre existing conditions on a structure and those are what the news likes to play up. Read your damn policy people. The carrier has outs for all sorts of things if you do not maintain your home or create a negligent hazard. The reason I reference the category of the storm is to show that as tough as you Yankees like to act, you are just whiny babies. Every year when Hwy 12 gets wiped out do you hear the OBX residents whine and cry? Do rock stars hold a concert for them? No, they use their boats till the road is fixed and move on with life. And Ricky NY is the Financial Capital of the US but London is the Financial Capital of the World.
Actually the Insurance Companies make most of their money from investments not premiums. Just sayin'.
Now....there you go again....burying morons with facts!! of course, you are 100% correct on that. lol
What??? Et tu, Brutus?? You too are burying morons with accurate facts?? What are we to do with you and rcarter??!!?? Damn!! You make it soooo hard!!
Exactly. Most carriers pay out 95%+ of their premiums in claims. They make $ by investing. That the insurance carriers and FEMA are not the crooked ones here. Every time a cane comes through here some tree companies try and gouge consumers due to demand. Yes there are a lot of folks who tried to screw people on claims to make a buck and yes if a carriers employee commits fraud they are liable. But guess what, they have insurance for that Sandy was terrible for all that got hit and I wish you the best for a speedy recovery. If a claims adjuster or insurance person is trying to screw you then please report them ASAP. My industry does not need any more bad apples. If you do not know how to report them PM me and I will get you a contact.
If you own your home you are not required to have flood insurance. That was the case with a lot of homes so those people that didn't have it where S out of luck. I had flood insurance because I was still carrying a mortgage received a mere 30g. Sounds like a lot but consider the fact that my home was over 50% damaged, I now had to raise the house to new height standards which is 9.5 feet. I would have to rebuild, refinish, new utilities, furnish insulate, etc., and raise the house with that. My best guesstimate put that total at around 150.k roughly. We're was I going to come up with that? The bank? HA no chance. Grants? right...no way only a few million and how many people applying ? If your home is not brought up to the new standards, your insurance rates could go as high as 20.000 a year. That's no joke! Check new flood zone plan. Imagine what a cat 5 could change.
Pretty sure that Flood Insurance is heavily regulated by the Federal Government. IIRC, all policies are pretty much the same with zero opportunities for loopholes to screw the policy holder. As well, premiums are capped throughout the nation...maybe around $600 per year I think. Pretty basic stuff, to be used in conjunction with your regular homeowner's policy.
How are you going to raise your home?? Raising it on steel beams, do you mean?? And yes, large storms do really suck, and I too hope all those affected in your are (and certainly you) get the help you need to get it done. Fortunately, we here in northern New England haven't really gotten socked with a major storm in a long time. Our winter storm can indeed suck, but nothing really like a true Cat 5.
That would be a waste of money. The state of NJ got 6 billion for the relief. But it got detoured to pay for Common Core, Food Stamps, raises for State Legislature, all the things that Sandy directly hit, huh? Or so I was informed by a little canary I know who is part of your beloved joisey legislature. Oh, of course.....shhhhh....don't tell anybody. We certainly don't want those nut bags at Fox News to hear about his!! Shhhhhh....... o bagus
Barry, I'm kinda surprised that you don't know about this...don't they do this kind of stuff over on the EC? Houses get raised here pretty frequently. Unbolt or de-nail the house from the existing foundation...raise the house in unison with a series of professional jacking systems...install new foundation (usually concrete stemwalls). A little involved, but fairly basic and common.
Well that's another story and very lengthy to get into. Let's just say I took a big, big hit. My wife and I are rebuilding our lives at this time and nothing more. It's been a struggle and a lot of people are struggling through this and past storms everywhere. Rich or broke many lives have been deeply effected because of where we desire to live. Some have no choice and like my insurance adjuster told me... " that's the chances you take" and in some sick twisted way he's right. Let's stop building on the coast. Free beach for all! Let's make smarter long term decisions about developing our coastlines.
You want to talk about erosion and beach damage? Check this out: http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/sea/coast/erosion/washaway.html For some really cool stuff, do a Google Search on "Washaway Beach". Even cooler, do the same search on Google Earth. Talk about "Deliverance By The Sea"...you can even faintly hear a banjo when you drive by. And to top it off, the place breaks almost like a point break when it's working. Albeit a point break with sunken houses, cars, and broken pipes and concrete underneath you. Oh, and I hear it's pretty damn sharky.
