Just found out via an instagram post that Austin Saunders has decided to quit shaping surfboards. Apparently after the birth of his son he decided he didn't want to be around the chemicals anymore...can't blame the guy but this definitely sucks cause I just saved up the cash to have him shape me a mini-simmons.

Beautiful boards. Many are works of art. Is his entire shop/store closing down soon?

Austin Saunders is his full name. Your full name? Is jackass troll.

Austin told me that the retail shop tied him down for too many hours. He couldn't do some of the things he enjoys because he was stuck in the retail surf shop, forced to deal with kook jackasses. (he didn't really say that last part about the jackass, but you know where this is going)

Austin is an interesting person. Core to the max, real old-school & a young guy. Good surfer, esp when you consider his dims. Austin has built his own house. Shapes some of the most gorgeous, functional surfboards. He will still shape boards for the fortunate few on the custom level. Creates amazing items from wood & metal. Is a family man. Likes to gut & rebuild classic cars. Has a great relationship with his parents & family.

I'm fortunate to own a Rocketfish by Austin.

If you want to troll, try first connecting your brain to that flapping gash above your elongated prow & that trash bucket in the center of your face.

Seems like owning a surf shop would suck. I can't blame him for gettting out.

Somewhat related: We have a skate shop in town called "Permanent Vacation". I went in there a few times. Looked like the dude running the place hadn't had a real vacation in forever. Pretty depressing in it's irony

Owning any company sucks. It's great if there's waves, but there hasn't been here. Plus vacations are out.
he probably quit to get affordable health care since having kids will drain that pool fast.

Nobody "owns" a company. The company "owns" you.
You are and always will be a slave to it.
(oh, wait, can we say that word, "slave", in todays PC world? Maybe we shouldn't be talking like that?)

A few of his boards have trickled down to our neck of the woods and they are very nice. Definitely has a handle on the old school resin color/ cut laps/heavy traditional logs & 70's style work down. Seems that is the arc of many shaper dudes isn't it? Really hard working fellows that appreciate craftsmanship but get tired of the long hours, face melting styrene fumes, goobers trying to get a deal (I'm on the team!), neighbors *****ing about the smell then having to set up shop next to meth labs on the wrong side of the tracks, trying to find help doing a job where toxic materials are used and you really have to work (real work, like dirty, smelly, suffering kind of man work), etc. Hope he has found a great gig were he can surf more and still afford health insurance for his fam, no doubt he will because the attention to detail in his work is telling of a mans character IMHO.

I work with a dude that moved down here from Sandbridge (i think), he has one of his logs, and it's a nice one, sucks to see a good shaper hang it up.

I think you & morgellon's jackasshat strike reach-arounds when you shower together.

    Just kidding, sparky...?

The Forum went troll-free for a solid several weeks. And now the trolls are returning, like the swallows to Capistrano or perhaps a better analogy is like flies to their own stink.

Trying to be diplomatic here, sparkus, the trolls are after one thing & one thing only: to turn decent surf-related treads into odes to their own trollexistence.

Austin's a core dude & there are, thankfully, more people like him than there are trolls.

The irony of shaping 70s inspired retro ****sticks with pretty resin tints and complaining about dealing with kooks all the time.

speaking of shapers, as i said earlier, I was gonna ask him to shape me a mini simmons. Anybody know if Friarson makes 'em. I've heard really good things about his boards but never ridden one

Its a mini simmons, you can cut a piece of foam into a square and throw glass over top of it and it will surf the same as having the leonardo divinci of surfboard shaping spend the later part of a century tirelessly toiling over the concaves of the tail exit. It's a turd that goes straight fast and makes knee high waves tolerable.

Austin Surfboards are the Bomb. Been riding a custom Austin for three year. I have 7 other boards that basically site in garage collecting dust. Sad news from the Va. Beach.

good for Austin, saw some of his boards up in a kbunk surfshop a few years back, wish i had picked one up. i've heard he's like the Tyler of the east coast with his craftsman style/dedication to the craft.

Nice. I'll keep that in mind when getting someone to shape me said turd. As long as it makes knee to thigh tolerable that's what matters.

i heard from his mom that he did not quit just moved his board shop to his house. He still shapes boards, just not based out of oceanfront
