Well, whatever you do, don't rely on strength-training alone ... there is a serious cardiovascular aspect to surf paddling that weight-training alone won't accomplish. Also consider the fact that hold-downs will be much more manageable if you're not completely out-of-breath with a spiked heart-rate when you have to hold your breath for an extended period of time.
There's a lake near my home, I wonder if I can bribe the security to look the other way, but I'm sure some onlooker would get joy reporting me out in it paddling.

Pull ups for your Back, diamond push ups for your triceps, and to really target your shoulders elevated ur legs on steps and do pushups. You can lift 3xs your body with weights but nothing is better than liftting your own bodyweight and you look like a douche with a curl bar
Good lord will you people please stop giving exercise advice. Do you guys really think Gruvi is going to actually do this stuff? Do you really think that somebody can't figure out how to exercise on their own? How/why do people get caught up in this nonsense? I guess there's alot of exercise gurus on here who want to show off their knowledge..........about push ups. Hmmm, the lifegaurds make their first appearance of the summer at my spot tomorrow....Area schools will be done by mid-next week at the latest(Ha, Sandy added some days to them kids' year)..........the forum is getting really summer-ized....... I am one of the friendliest people, especially when I'm surfing, it's when I'm the happiest me. And in a way I'm stuck in your situation, work keeps me far enough away from the ocean that i end up missing a lot of the very few good days, so lighten up compadre... This whole "season" thing, you have to realize, is exactly what draws the negative comments...lol...sh#t, dude the season starts Jan 1 and ends December 31st...and for the most part the people that surf it during that season are not jumping for joy when the guys who think the season just started start showing up in the water...respect. Tonight at work it's pushups then! I see where the triangle pushups hit hard and fast can especially emulate the strength and cardio of paddling.

Then all you have to do in addition is swim around the breaks in your best imitation of a seal to create your perfect surfing workout. Plus, there's this dude down there you really should look up.
