I'm going to be down in Bethany this weekend with family. The town rules say "Surfing allowed north of Campbell Place."
Is this any time of day? Or only before/after life guard hours?

They dont allow any surfing in Bethany Beach during guard hours. The least of your worries is where you are allowed to surf. Surfing in Bethany was wrecked a few years ago by coarse-grained beachfill creating to shore-break conditions. I saw a few surfable waves there right after Hurricane Irene temporarily pulled some sand off the beach into the bars, but that lasted a week and since then its been unsurfable there for months on end.

Should I head up to Indian river inlet? Any specific rules/hours up there? Any other suggestions?

even thinking of it for a second,..that was a complete disaster. at least for the surfing there. terrible to think of how it was a whole different feeling and allowances for entry points, etc. sink to think people are missing out on the diversity that the coast could offer on any given swell. people seemed smart enough to keep quiet about it, so you know it was worth it.

Indian river is a joke these days too, your best bet is to head south.

Assateague...leave the wifey in the hotel....bring industrial strength horse fly repellent & maybe a machine gun, too....those are some big honkin' critters if the wind is blowing from the west...
