bong and walmart? lol billabong makes nice stuff and will bounce back. i dont think anyone is going to stoop that low into retail again after what happened to rusty.

dont forget the big guys do charitable works too. on a much larger scale too

There's plenty of big name surfers who can advocate for themselves like laird and that young kid Kai Lenny. I'm just saying with less big name brands in the over crowded industry already there might be room for some cool innovators to emerge. I just like to see individuality in surfing and there's so many creative people involved.

They already have. Share price peaked at around $17 and is now around $0.50. Obviously not everyone bought in at $17, but even at the IPO price of around $2.50, you're looking at an 80% loss. Are you using a locally produced computer?

i hear ya but the big names have the dough for cool innovations like e4 technology and stuff that actually revolutionizes the sport. cool new innovative tees and key chains arent going to help my surfing game at all. "surf clothing" wont help either.

    surfing checklist:
    surfboard
    boardshorts
    rubber
    wax
    babes
    booze

    thats og innovation for ya

thats messed up dude. billabong may be a big time boss now but they started off just like your pals at jetty did. bongs been around since the near beginning of the us surfing craze. theyve been through it all and theyve seen it all. give them some slack. they deserve your respect!

The stretchy thin light BBong Recycler Series boardshorts are some of the best one's I've ever worn

I had an Australian Shepherd and I named him Billabong. He was cute, but a real Houdini, always jumping the fence, escaping the yard and swimming in the canals. He also liked to chew on my boat trailer wires, so whenever I would put in at a ramp, the trailer lights would short out and I would get pulled over on the way home. He was a real chick magnet though. I miss him.

Best breed of dog all around. Did he open doors too? Never cease to amaze me.

Just look what surfing looked like in the 60's just before it exploded - no corporate jungle - just a bunch of guys riding their own style doing what they like. No posers wearing mass marketed clothes, shoes, hats whatever. Before my time but would be cool to experience.

    Good point.
Nearly everything was 'non-branded.' Now, nothing escapes branding. We're on overload.

IMO it is always preferable, and way cooler, to wear clothing and style that is made and created by locals - surf shops, cool pubs, shapers, music/art festivals - that kind of stuff. I still love my Ray Bans and Costa Del Mar sunglasses though. The best boards I have ridden, along with Al Merrick and T & C ( they work great in great surf ) are by local shapers dialed in to what I need in the local stuff. They usually do, or have associates, that do cool art and beach gear and clothing.

The big corporate mall surf shops like Billibong and Quicksilver (God bless they took care of Dora until he died) are for the tourists. But they put on cool contests, donate to Surfrider, sponsor lots of kids, and produce awesome videos. So may the surf Gods bless them as part of the tribe. I don't subscribe to the "Tall Poppy Syndrome", as they call it in OZ, where the masses feel it is their duty to chop down to size those that try to excell. But as a so called savvy soul surfer, I vote with my wallet.

There's plenty of innovation everywhere else in surfing. Look at Patagonia they've come out with some sweet cold water gear and that's a legit company. There's always going to be money for innovation that's what venture capitalism is for. Less big name surf board shapers is good for every other 'small guy' who can make you a custom board. Look at Tom morey surfboards and grain surfboards for example. Companies like that are the heart and soul of this awesome thing we call surfing not a big corporate mass producing publicly traded company who really only cares about yearly net income.
I'm willing to bet the CEO of billabong isn't an avid surfer. The owner of grain surfboard is , whenever it's good I'm usually in the water with him. Just sayin.
