with no intentions of being racist or saying anything offensive.... there are little differences between all races.
the notable differences with black guys is that they have, in general, slightly thicker muscle and denser bones. I don't have link to support this but it was said to me by a family member who is a surgeon... so maybe its true, maybe not... but if its true.. I think this is a disadvantage in the water and could explain, in part, why black guys don't usually feel comfortable in the water.

What I think you mean is african - americans. To just say black doesn't really make sense. There are many countries where the population would be considered "black" that have a large surfing population. As far as african americans and surfing, I think it's lack of interest. Socially, it's just not something that happens.

It's a little of everything, culture, physical differences etc. Black people, even overweight black people are far heavier for their size because of skeletal differences and muscle density. A friend of mine in college refused to go into the ocean over his waist because he told me he would sink like a rock. He was also completely uncomfortable in the water and would scream if anything even a piece of seaweed touched his foot, he would yell "oh know you didn't !" And run out of the water, lol. This is the cultural side, he had been told his whole life from his parents that the ocean is dangerous and he could never shake it. I had a bunch of fights as a kid and the one fight I had with a black guy, I punched him in the face and it was like hitting a brick wall. That proved to me something was up, my hand was throbbing for hours after. I see no reason all those things couldn't be overcome, and I have seen some great black surfers in the Caribbean, but they were all slightly built guys.

I tell you why....go to a public pool in Baltimore City and then you'll know why. That was for you Zach 619, I could have said Philadelphia but I didn't.

I actually saw two African Black Americans last summer. Naturally, I told them to beat it and go back to the basketball court. Nahh, I'm just kidding. I was very nice to them. Very nice. I set race relations up aboot three years by my courtesy.

It's not just surfing it's all water-based activities. Who knows? I don't think big bones or weight has anything to do with it. Shawn Briley is huge and he surfs. Shoots brah, a lot of them choke mokes are big bodied people. Maybe it has something to do with the mind-set of descendents of the slave ships - the boat, the ocean crossing..........

I'll tell you why African Ghetto Americans don't surf - it's too expensive in most areas(board, wetsuits, boots, gloves........new Hurley Sweatshirt and TFL power gloves).

Maybe it has to do with an attitude that the ocean is a dangerous place humans have no place being in?

    Maybe they just don't care?

heres' a nugget i didn't consider. right or wrong; this could make sense or its more sensible that this
is one part of a confluence of reasons. cab is an anomaly and the thread simply asks "why.?"

For those interested aboot Cab Spates, in some form of white surfer guilt, word had it on here a few years ago that Mr. Spates moved to Hawaii. I don't know, that's what some dude said. He seemed to know what he was talking aboot.

Though others have the opinion that he was caught fooling around with Jon Klientop's daughter at Peabody's one evening, and was forced out of the Hampton Roads or Tidewater area. I don't believe that story, though. I don't think that chick was even born back then. Ah, rumors...just horrible.

Man, remember when the VA Beach area had a lot of semi-well-known surfers. What happened?

I will say it in one word...sharks...blacks are scared of sharks, I have quite a few black friends and all of them will tell you the same thing, even when the blacks go to the beach, if you notice, they will not get any deeper than waist deep.

that's pretty accurate, boards are too expensive and the ocean is a dangerous place.my black friends laughed at me everytime I went to the beach.they seriously ask why would u want to go to the beach?its hot as hell, the water is scary, and it sucks lol.

theres plenty of big guys who surf and rip, like briley.u know briley is kalani chapmans older bro.its just different backgrounds.white people like hockey, and black people like basketball, but so do white people.im positive theres lots of black surfers, just not in America.i remember reading in shaun tomsons book, his best surfing partner was a young black kid who didn't even know how to swim, and they surfed j bay together everyday.

    Come on guys.

Bone density? Wake up people. It took me five minutes of research to debunk that sh*t. There's other factors that are far more crucial, like the fact that:

"As few as 30 per cent of black children have learned to swim well ...

Swimming has a long history of segregation and exclusion in the US, dating from the days when west African slaves—who were usually good swimmers—were banned from teaching their children, for fear of them escaping.

While some black populations do have a higher average bone density and mass than whites—about 300gm—buoyancy varies for every swimmer, and differences within races are far greater than those between them."”

Use your f*cking brain and you might not perpetuate racism. I'm not saying you guys are racist per se, but the lack of skepticism and thought that allows you make such statements is the very mechanism by which psuedo-scientific bull**** spreads- often in the service of our societies power structures.

I guarantee you there is no black man on this earth that is so 'bone dense' that he cannot tread water.

A lot of black folks can't swim, and a lot are scared of the ocean. Plus it's not a skill considered valuable in black culture. There are socio-economic reasons as well. On the flip side, you don't see too many white step dancers or latino bluegrass musicians.
