A swell showing up on the forecast is like a hot chick walking into the room. You don't telegraph your interest, you don't let her know how much you like her. If you want to score, you play that **** COOL.

Same thing goes for waves. When a few good days of surf pop up on the long range, don't go on the forum and talk about how great it's going to be, how stoked you are, and where and when you're going to paddle out. That's amateur hour. Play that **** cool and keep it to yourself and your crew of friends. At least until afterwards.

ooook. on the surf forum which discusses surf related topics i'm sure nobody will be excited
enough to discuss an impending swell. we're all gonna play it cool.

Maybe we should tell Mr. SI not to post this possible swell crap! He needs to play it cool and then tell us after the swell hits. Bwahahaha

I would prefer we spend more time discussing why the swell will be good, rather than the fact that it will or will not be good. Being a surf predicting website, I imagine this is the perfect place to talk about it.

I'm sorry but when it's flat for two weeks you have the right to discuss any potential swell coming up, it's like Ethiopians who hear helicopters from afar, they can speculate that it's food being brought to them all they want, can't keep them from being stoked about that food, it won't jinx them, it's called HOPE! Now, if you've been well fed and getting waves on the regular than the appetite should be satisfied and nobody should freak out when something hits the radar. Most of us have been starving, so hype away my friends. Just don't blow up spots or bring groups of people with you and we should all get our fair share to hold us over for the next flat spell.

Isn't talking about and hoping for a swell ahead of time what prediction is all about? But yeah I guess we should only talk about fun things after the fact, no more looking forward to christmas or birthdays. Don't even think of coming on here and saying how stoked you are for your PR trip in a month. Looking to the future and being excited for good things to come is part of being human.

Surfers are so funny sometimes. I just picture guys, with voodoo dolls in their garage, on their knees, praying on mats to the surf gods, hoping that this 4ft swell @ 9 seconds really does show up next week....

Surf prediction is science. Yeah, things change, sure... Like the fact that 6 days ago, today was labeled "Flat", but when a tropical storm develops 3 days later, things change and it was waist to chest today.... Yeah!...

But I don't how so many people on here complain about getting "skunked". If anything, swells develop, and pop up. Not the other way around....

When a swell shows up 5 days in advance, at it is predicted: 5ft @ 9 seconds or something.... Yeah, maybe that will fluxate a little, as does the weather and everything involved. But so what if it shows up and it's 3.6ft @ 8 seconds when the swell arrives. Its not like we are chasing swells around the world. Trying to win the Billabong XXL. I mean, if your day is ruined because the waves were chest high, when last week it said it was supposed to be head high... That aint a jinx or a skunk.

When "something" pops up on the radar, something ALWAYS actually shows up. May be a little bigger. May be a little smaller.

But like I said, I aint "hyping anything" Soon as this start developing on Friday, I looked at tuesday-friday and knew, SOMETHING is coming. And sure enough, Swell info said what it would be today, and it was DEAD on. It was actually a little better than SI said it would be, but the BUOYS did what they were supposed to do.

Know your buoys. Know your beach. If you are getting skunked on all these waist-head high "swells" maybe you are just going to the wrong place or looking at the wrong data.

Maybe I just dont get my hopes up as much as some, but I am never dissapointed with the swells that come, cause i Know what to expect. Its not like Micah's site told me that today was supposed to be 6-8 feet, and it was really 2-3... Micah said it would be 1-2 feet and it was 1-3.... score...

    Tomorrow will be better: JINX.

Thursday will be even better: JINX

I am going to Myrtle from Friday through Monday, so I might even make it up to Myrtle and score there on Friday. SI says 3-4 foot and clean that day.... JINX

And to the OP, you bet your arse I'm talking bout a cane when we've gone 1.16 cane seasons without one. C'mon bro. What made us go 0-fer last year plus the month of June? Talking them up too much? Bro, do you even get stoked?

100% agree and even if you have to quell your desire to relinquish your thoughts it still helps in lowering expectations and allows you to have a good time out in the surf more often!

I don't buy it bro....never lower your expectation on anything. When you ask your boss for raise of a $1.00 and only get .20, your not going to be enjoying yourself and having a good time, are you?
