    Hello!

I'm from Orange County and I've been surfing for a year. I surf about 4 -5 days a week. I've been riding my fun board 7'6"x22"x2 7/8". I can catch waves and go down the line, trimming, turning. Now I want to move down to short board. I tried my friend's shortboard the other day and it was fun. The board size is about 6'2"x19"x2.5". I was able to stand up 4 times on the waves but paddling was so hard. I'm thinking of getting a transition board to make it easier. I saw a board LOST Mayhem 6'8"x20"x2.75" on CL. I think it's a hybrid of short and fish board (picture below, blue one). Volume is about 40l. with that width and thickness it'll be easier for me to paddle but i dont know if i can duck dive on it since the volume is big.
I also saw another board by McCrystal 6'4"x19"x2.5" (picture below).
About me, I am 5'7" 155lbs 25 years old, relatively fit. Do you think should i go for the Lost for just go straight for the McCrystal? Or if you have any board that you would recommend :)

    Thank you so much

I'm basically your size and only 2 years older. I'd say just get a shortboard. In the 6'0 range that has some thickness to it. It'll "fit" you better. At our size, I feel over 6'0 is a diffrent feel and requires another "transition". So instead of transitioning multiple times, I'd suggest getting something shorter and just adding volume. That's just my opinion though. At your age and size you really can't go wrong. If it's to small, your young enough and surf enough that you'll get the hang of it in time

Let me throw in my two cents. I highly recommend something with a big wide nose. It'll make paddling and getting into waves so much easier. I use my groveler board in waves up to shoulder height. Paddling is a piece of cake and it is a short board. Look at the Lost RV shape or something similar. If I were to have learned again I definitely would have gotten a board like that. Wider nose and big sweet spot, it'll make the transition a lot easier, I think.

    WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH

This guy's first post and he is soliciting advice like he owns the place. Do I just walk into your apartment and ask your girlfriend for a handski? Yes. Yes I do. Point being is that the world doesn't owe you anything. Neither does this fouroumne.

    Barry, spot on.

Newb, you're a feather. And you're not that tall. Paddle out on a 6'+ 40L shorty on chest high days and you're a tool.

You need 27 liters max of something fish shaped, but run it as a thruster with legit medium sized fins (for 155lbs) or you'll slide all over the place.

At 5'7", 6' is too long for your shortie. You'll miss the sweet spot on that board every time.

If you're any good and you want a real small wave shortboard, get yourself a DHD skeleton key or DHD double shot, LSD Chubby Chedda, Pyzalien, etc. Get a Dion. Or be honest with yourself and get a real small wave awesome board like Lost RV or a Rusty Dwart or go a little wider like a Superbranded Fling or a Lost Puddle Jumper. Something that paddles like your surf instructor is pushing you but still looks like a short board so you'll feel like you know how to surf. They're all awesome.

Trick to duck diving a bigger board is to stay under water until you lost consciousness. If you happen to wake up on the beach with someone giving you mouth to mouth, stick your tongue is his mouth if its a dude. Then commit a crime, go to jail, get anally tortured, meet with your parents at visiting hours and have that awkwardness of them knowing you got raped while you try and play it off like you didnt, then morph into an overweight black guy and yell "i can't breathe" and die, and have a shameful death. Thats how you surf.

    Welcome to the fouroumne.

@UncleBarrels: I know the etiquette in the line up but i guess i need to learn the forum etiquette. Thank you!

That's some serious humility, bravo. You'll go far, friend.

my suggestion... neither of these boards. The Lost is more suitable for you, but that stringer is gonna hurt. The Crystal is too small for you at this point. I'd be looking for a 6'6 x 19 in good condition.
