I generally ride an 8' longboard but also have a 7' fun board. The times I have been out on it, it is obviously a slower paddle than my longboard. Would the better conditions to ride my shorter be be during medium to long period swells? Thanks for any input.

Yeah thats the classic longboard to short board transitonal period . After a cpl session with the shorter board you will be fine. I go from a 9'10 to a 6'2 but to keep the transitonal period down I try to take out the smaller board once or twice a week . It helps alot also to build upper body strenght and swim laps aswell you will notice a good improvment
