I don't know what swell has done with their folly washout surf report, and I'm assuming elsewhere, but even a blind man could make better predictions and observations. Well done Waist to stomach chop now equals knee high sheet glass. Bravo.
we have very little patience or sympathy for those that bash the reports around here. we are thankful for the info given and if you have a problem or felt that you were wronged then log off and get your arse down to the beach and see if you can do better.
its long period ground swell. Showing on the buoys very well. Always a bit tricky as tides always make a big difference on these long period swells. And, generally there is lots of variability as continental shelf plays a bigger influence on the longer period swells.
Yeah the folly forecast has been off the past 2 days. But then again we got an entire week of solid surf last week so you cant really complain. The buoy off the pier is reading 1.3ft at 11-12 seconds but it jumps up a bit at high tide, still with the tide push its not over thigh to waist high.
About a week ago, buoy 41004, east of Charleston went down. This is the buoy that the Swellinfo model predictions were being cross referenced with and adjusting by. And, since this buoy went down, there hasn't been a good reference buoy to switch to. Might have to switch to 41008, evn tho its pretty far south. Does, the incoming or higher tide make a difference around Folly? In some places along the East Coast, the higher tide makes a big difference for the longer period ground swells. And, other places, especially along the Southeast just get blocked completely with the continental shelf influence with long swell periods.
Generally folly is pretty terrible any time after about an hour after high tide. With a falling tide the beach(The washout especially) is prone to really bad rips that ruin any potential for waves. Now this isnt always the case. For example, when we have a pretty solid swell, (4-5ft+) like last week for instance, you can surf on pretty much any tide. Low tide offering dredging barrels and closeouts and when the tide fills in there is more of a face and it is much more makeable. I think this particular swell just isnt filling in. The buoy (Station FBPS1) hasn't peaked over 2ft in the past 2 days. With minimal conditions like this the only time to surf is an hour before and after high tide.
Good to see FBPS1 back online. These buoys go in and out of service all the time, and unfortunately there is no efficient way to keep track. I went ahead and added FBPS1 back to the Buoy Maps.
The surf at wrightsville, only filled in on wednesday through thursday, the rest of the weekend had a horriblly high tide and the swell only showed at two spots on the whole beach. Everywhere else was like knee-thigh.
Me and some friends took a trip to Wrightsville on Saturday and the forecast was right on. Waist to chest occasional Shoulder high sets....
Yeah we left early and showed up at dead low tide around 11:30 surfed for 4 hours and went home. I noticed that it got really swamped once the tide started to fill in . I think wrightsville favors a lower tide as apposed to a high tide like folly.
im super stoked about how acurate the reports are at wrightsville. they were exactly what they where when it came to wave size. i went thurs to mon multiple times a day and low tide was killer but high tide was mushy and shorebreak
Yeah the high tide really messed it up, but it was super fun during he lower tides, I got a couple of barrels (didn't get out of them though)
>(didn't get out of them though) Ha, ha! That's making me laugh. Getting in them is half the fun, yeah? Can't believe I missed this. Jersey looked pretty good, too. I miss so NC so bad! Catch one for me. dr
i saw the biggest barrel ever on wrightsville yesterday it was perfect but i was paddling out and for the rest of the day i didnt see anymore going off
Come on ocean, don't you know you have to obey what the surf reports on swell info say. If it says head high and glassy you better be that or else! I don't care what the conditions are like, stick to the report... Ocean! Well i had fun wed-sun and thats all that matters
