a lot of us full time working class ppl have been getting sht from all the retired and school attending morons around here for having to go to work when there's good swell. all the talk of of it clearing up in the lineup by 9am, and enjoying the sunshine and all the warmth it provides has made the working class real jelly. it's that time of the year tho, where that jelly equates to some extra bread. My bonus is rolling in next Friday, and man i could use it (might be deserving of it too). Other than the non-surfing stuff (clothes, tools, camping gear), i've had my eyes out for these three thangs: 6'0 shortbord - smallest i got is a 6'4" in my quiver, but i'm 6'3" so it's not really needed... but it would be nice to have one to f around with on the bigger days. keeping in mind if it's local to decide, also not looking for at a price range of +-$100 4/3 Wetsuite - got a 3/2 on its 3rd year, but it's velcro collar is killing me out there. always coming undone, just a real hassle for me. so i'd like to keep that around when the cool weather just comes in and just go one further (4/3) for those colder days when the booties are on the feet. based on the wetsuite advice, looking for O'Neil, Ripcurl and maybe XCel +-$75 8'+ Single Fin Longboard - i've got a 7'6" that i consider a longboard, but i guess technically it's a funboard. on occasion it doesn't catch some waves, but i've always considered getting something bigger to capture that trim and also i don't have a single fin board which i feel like i'm missing out on. +-$300 with both boards, i'm considering to shell out more for a local shaper but i'm a craigslist hunter not a +$500 board buyer. maybe some of you guys are in the same boat, and am anticipating what to do with that bonus check or extra xmas $$. feel free to share, i'll add the longboards that i've got my eyes on thus far because i could use some of that great SI 'vice
I just bought a $275 rod and reel, Merry Christmas to me! I agree on the craigslist stuff! I've picked up quite a few boards from CL! Sometimes you find someone like MrCoop who treats his boards like gold and sells them pretty cheap! (Thanks again for the V3 Coop!) I also found a brand new (no piss) 4/3 Rip Curl Flashbomb that I ended up getting for $200. I travel to NC once a month, so that helps broaden my range for CL items. Good luck!
Good on ya UnfurleD... This, however, does remind me of the "Christmas Vacation" movie when Clark Griswold was expecting his big bonus and got a "Jelly of the Month" club subscription...
Our used board market isn't as big as a lot of areas. Look at Florida's craigslist, there is a lot more out there for a good bit cheaper. A little drive, new board and some surf is not a bad way to spend a weekend. Btw, this weekend's report is all over the place. If I get a window and there's a wave I'm heading to Folly.
I hear you about not having flexibility this time of year. I'm a 9-5'r and can no longer do my evening patrols during the winter because of how quickly it gets dark. I'll probably miss a majority of the weekday swells and will be limited to very brief AM sessions if I even make it. This month is my bonus too, i.e. 3 paychecks. Now I'm eyeing down my next purchases. Puddle jumper and trip to CR. Craigslist in Jerz/NY isn't bad but the amount of cheap gear on CL in CA is just mind boggling. Check it out.
Bonus time is March for my employer. Thinking about picking up a 6'10 Walden Mini Magic. It's tough to find time to get out this time of year and it seems like a good board for winter sessions in the 5 mm suite when my shoulders give out in 20 minutes.
Actually i'm with you guys on checking the surrounding areas. I'm open to driving to up to Wilmington or down to Jax for a board, but i am already considering New Years in Space Coast which has a number of boards there. I did see a board today in Myrtle Beach area, and it got swiped as soon as it checked it again this afternoon. of course, i check my buddy's website - ShredSeason.com & his former website BoardGrab.com- but moreover it's on the CL. Folly might not be good until Sunday evening - hi tide at dusk so that could help the push, but like you said Clem it's been strange. Yesterday was a solid day for the LB'rs and that wasn't expected by any of the surfing forecasters. and unfortunately, we've been getting swell (of what we can get) during the week. i got 4 hours left of PTO, so i'm using it wisely haha - when i need a couple extra hrs in the water pretty much. i'll post of my findings next week - right now or in the past week or so i've had my eye on a guy who's got a Gary Wilson (local SC shaper) 9'4"LB that's a Red Hot Log shape - nothing too special but it's in my criteria. i can get pretty antsy with getting justifiable boards when i got the dough
i got an older pal who got one a couple months ago. same size i believe too. he loves it, says it gives him some freedom to try things on the wave which you wouldn't think by lookin at it
Kill what I eat...no bonuses, no paid vacations....just grind it out. You can work and surf with flexibility. Sometimes even the self employed get hemmed up and miss waves though.
no pool plans this year, maybe next yr. can't believe you put that voodoo on me CB haha. can't go one xmas without catching that flick, instaClassic
Yeeeeaaaaah boy! I get my bonus next Friday. Just bought a new stick. So not spending it on surfing gear. But I'll be putting it in the bank for a surf trip. I also get an extra week of paid vacation after new years...so you know. Now the decision is do i take a 2 week trip and and be left with just my week of sick days for those random swells that are worth taking a day off for. Or do i just take a week trip and keep that extra week in the bank for a different trip or for extra cash at the end of the year.
Ahh yes, I remember when my bonus would go towards fun stuff. PR and CR trips, new boards, new guns, etc This years bonus? Went to a new water heater and payments on my youngest son's braces.
just listed might be worth a peek unfurl for long board..... http://charleston.craigslist.org/spo/5910707914.html course im selling a shortboard if u wanna join the WSL(world softboard league) foam top the one by catch surf/tom morey 54 in http://charleston.craigslist.org/spo/5892180875.html
i saw that Catch Surf and was thinking it was you, Frost. really opposed to soft boards for some reason, but thx for the heads up. did see that island classic, that should get snagged pretty quick but not necessarily the shape i'm after. Looking more for a square tail in a LB then a rounded off or pin tail. also i don't get that check till the 16th, but i was gonna shoot some bids on CL that week. i'm looking at some in Myrtle, Wilmington, and even down to Jax. Gotta see who will hold till then to prioritize a good trip, surf shops perusing on the way, and if there's gonna be surf that wknd would be nice- which there even might be out here in Folly. the best news about today was that i can snag all 3 off the xmas surfing list if needs be. and then...i've been keeping my eyes on getting an old skool Jaguar (car) to replace the Korean sedan i got now. Did see one up in Wilmington that i need to talk to the owner about, but that would eliminate (at least briefly to sell the Korean) the surfing impulses for a few months. decisions, mayne
cool,, good time to be a buyer,,usually lots for sale between now and spring, I picked up that soft top thinking it may be similar to a beater,,way too much nose rocker though
