This is a bit goofy, but I'll include it here anyway. My Dad at times would do a strange sort of thing when my folks had visitors or were visiting other family members during a holiday. He would go outside and wash cars: their cars, the visitors' cars, the cars of the those they were visiting. He'd check the air pressure on all the tires too. Seemed to always have a pressure gauge in his pocket. Maybe he did it to get away and take a break from everyone. Never really thought of it that way before, just one of my Dad's odd behaviors.
Anyway, maybe you could do something like that to take a break while visiting the in-laws. Don't know what part of the country you're going. We lived in So. Calif., so winters weren't bad. Or you could pull a stunt like cousin Eddie:

Just don't watch the movie if you've recently had a close call in some 8-10' chop with a broken leash. The storm scene and deep sea footage will creep you out.

On the topic of reads, you guys like any non-fiction topics? War history is a great one. I read social science as well.

First choice would be to get out of house and find a bar.

If you gotta read the book "**** my father says" is easy to read and funny

Not that I've got anything against a good book, but you could just play with your smartphone all day, like everyone else does.
