everything that they said. also i like to when its big like head high plus not just drop then bottom turn ill drop in at an angle and start riding the wall it has much more power and speed than dropping in and then snap and then pump.
thanx so much for all of your advice.i didn't expect this thread to blow up like it did. you guys have me so stoked for my next session. thanx!!
Yeah this has helped me too... My big problem right now is consistency (I know that comes with practice, and I practice a lot), so I know its only a matter of time. It's frustrating to have days where I'm really stoked and feel like I've turned a new corner and am kicking ass, then, the next time I go out I look almost like I'm just starting surfing again haha
Also timing is important to get the most out of it. Thats a good thing about surfing. There is always something better you can do. Most importantly have fun with it. If your not having fun, there is no point in being out there.
Thank you... The physics of the bottom turn are very easy. It is mostly about the board! My little potato chips will dig into a huge bottom turn with nothing more than an ankle tweak, but my fish require a solid bit of torque and pressure to really get the rails down to the right angle... But its all about the board. If you are learning to surf on a fun shape, you may want to reconsider what you call a bottom turn.... With bottom turning, start with gradual angles. Nice easy, almost pumping. Then once you get used to it, take a deeper, more vertical approach and set your rails more through your turn..... Go buy an old book called "Taj Burrows book of cool surf tricks"... It is the best surfing book ive ever read. It mostly photos, but it takes you step by step through every turn, all the way up to air reverses and stuff... And as far as the backside bottom turn being harder... yes, it can be, but when mastered, its super easy. Its almost more like turning a snowboard. Just imagine turning a snowboard on your heel side rail, and its the exact same effect. Frontside is not... But the leaning sensation and digging your rail is the same as in snowboard (only backside).... And if you are having trouble with steep backside bottom turns, grab your rail... Grabbing rail with style is a timeless approach to getting in a good power turn... Nothing wrong with using your hands and body to redirect your board... Just be careful style wise, at first, it may look pretty terrible.
