Read what I wrote--a clue is therein. What it is for you, is not what it is for me. I speak in riddles?? hahahaha!!
i think i understand what you are saying. but bear with me please. and contest aside let's keep it to just surfing. Are you saying that when surfing, the wave should be the primary item in the relationship with the surfer?
You do understand, little rick, I call everyone here a moron, and I always do so in jest. Please note, I also include myself in the moron club. Have great weekend. We here in Cow Hampsha are scheduled to get a small swell on Monday. Tomorrow I go for a 2 mile paddle on my longboard as there are zero waves (Lake Atlantic)
Exactly, along with your board--a threesome! The "anti-air" position I hold is for contests ONLY. If surfers want to bang out airs go for it. But in World Class contests?? I find them boring--seeing who "lands" and air is NOT surfing; it is something else. have an "air contest", but don't call it a surfing contest. Totally different. Barrels, cutbacks, big waves, bottom turns- all relationship/interplay with the wave.
OMG...Obviously everyone has an opinion. Launch point and landing point have everything to do with the interplay with the wave, when blasting an air. I too believe there is probably to much emphasis on airs in contest. I think in the right conditions where all maneuvers are possible getting "soooo Pitted" is the part that should stand out for scoring. I can't see this petition going anywhere...Nike is very embedded in the WSL as is a few other companies. Sponsor/P{roduct Placement/ratings/retail....it's business just like the NFL (well maybe not "just" like). I signed it because I agree with the premise but there is an underpinning throughout the WSL based on the Host Sponsor...Rip Curl Billabong etc and those they sponsor and the judging. Also, the ratings. WSL is trying to be the NFL....or maybe like the FEDEX CUP in golf....with a goal to grow viewership on live streams and generate $$$!!! Although the contest can have shi$%y judging, I still like watching most of the contest stops.
Thanks Barry, I'm not in total agreement but i see where you are coming from. the best airs to me are the ones that get you up and over a section into the next. Surfing to me is staying around the most critical part of the wave and riding it as long as possible. landing an air but not making the next section I think blows. That thing that Slater did was incredible to me. Because he kept going. I saw some of those guys get better scores for a smaller wave with 1 turn and an aerial and not continuing down the line when they could have then for larger waves that were ridden in the pocket all the way very well.
PJ, I totally agree with the blowing of the wave to get the air landed. Pocket presence, # of maneuvers, and finishing the actual wave should be factored for sure. Every once in a while, someone will do an air where the wave keeps reeeeeling and leaves surfer behind but the air just blows your mind (I thinking of the one JJ did in the pipe masters a couple of years ago.).
you think so? I'm not so sure peanut butter and jelly will work well together but i'll give it it a go.
I think the best way to do find out who the best competitive surfer in the world is to nationalize it like the Olympics. 1 surfer per country meets on the north shore and competes in 5 contests. The triple crown, the Eddie and a traditional longboard event held in town. scoring it like the triple crown. the guy that wins that is the best surfer in the world.
