Wow! Did not see that one coming at all!

That bridge has only exceded it's engineered lifespan by twenty years. Besides driving on it, don't anchor below or you'll get hit by chunks of falling concrete.

My buddy fishes with a diver that inspects the pilings. he said a lot are not attached to the bottom. just "floaters".
I'm told the out going bridge of OBX towards Va is closed

Via emergency ferry from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe. Much longer journey no matter how you slice it. At least it's not summer so it has a less severe financial impact on the local residents. Still that bridge situation has dragged on way too long. Friggin' SELC and DoW!

will the emergency ferry transfer tourists and other visitors? like people who want to bring in supplies or spend money on rentals? I am not joking, the isolation of a remote area is no joke

what about people who commute to work elsewhere?

    this seems like a sh!tshow

There has been plenty of time to repair or rebuild since the barge ran into it last century. but since the rich can fly in no one does crap. Can you say "Red State"?

Well the "rich" are all coming in from Blue States so I'm not sure what that has to do with anything. But why not hand this job over to a private company and see what arrangements could be made to keep it open more often. That is if you could find any company of stakeholders (other than the taxpayers of NC) stupid enough to invest in any hard structure on the OBX of this magnitude. I doubt you would find anyone to build or maintain it seeing that the lifetime of any concrete slab on the OBX is so short by comparison to other non-flood prone barrier islands. No entity could charge enough in tolls to make up the cost of building it in such short of a time frame. So we're stuck with NCDOT half-a$$ing it because it's a losing mans game building on the banks.

chich you really are a total b!tch and a dumb one if you still think there's a difference between red and blue., I said it YOU are Dumber than Dogsh!t. You have OK taste in women, but everything else is garbage.

HILARIOUS that you are expecting others to pay, who cares, f@ck the gvt, what if a private company built it instead of gvt and then they charged tolls? that would make the most sense.

asking gvt to build something with people's money on a moving sandbank is dumb. just like you.

why dont you pay for it?

oh that right you dont have the skills to earn a wage capable of doing anything except b!tching. I make **** for money, less than a union public employee, but I am smart enough to realize gvt is a losing game and people who think it owes them are the biggest freeloading douchbags ever

its douchebags like you and PJB that think there is endless resources to try and build their uptopia of perfect roads and 'free' healthcare that are killing America, please wake up and smell the responsibility.

what I make is mine, what you make is your and dont try and take mine or your gonna be sorry, your words promoting this socialist ideal world of taxing workers for free sh!t for everyone is the end of America, its you chich, you personally are ruining it.

    AAARRGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im loosing it against retards, can you please sterilize yourself and then jump in the soylent green dumpster!!!!!

Actually, in this case it's the radical left that has been holding things up. In the article Lee posted there's a link to some of the background behind the bridge's replacement and related delays. Basically, you have the Southern Enviromental Law Center and Defenders of Wildlife (plus a few other groups) throwing up objections and lawsuits to stop just about any course of action. There's alot of money behind these groups. Throw in a crooked judge or two and a lot of people suffer.

I am a lefty liberal myself and support responsible and reasonable actions to preserve our enviroment. But these people have an entirely different agenda beyond just enviromental preservation. Like so many other things, if you take things to an extreme, whether left or right, they get all fugged up

As far as tax dollars go, Dare County is a net 'giver' not a 'taker' to the state of NC. So it's not like they are sucking the money from somewhere else. It's not a left/right, red/blue thing either. Funding and overall support for a new bridge has never been the big issue just the other obstructionist stuff. Is building all kinds of structures on shifting and retreating barrier islands amidst rising sea levels the right thing to do? Of course not. But just like the situation in NJ and up and down our coasts, we started down that slippery slope a long time ago. Hard to turn back at this point.

Plenty of surf in kitty hawk kdh and nags head. No need to venture further south of Hatty. There is no surf in Atlantic beach other than a big south. And there is certainly nothing south of topsail island. Dont bother going down there. WB is full of hipsters and their waves rival that of lake Michigan's. CB is a beach nourishment closeout.

I always headed to Duck/Corolla. Gotta get up early to beat the traffic. At one time there was talk of a toll bridge.

everyone going to or from Hatteras has to take a 2+ hour ferry at Stumpy point instead of a 2 minute drive over the bridge. this hurts everyone. The locals and visitors this Christmas season and businesses will suffer for it. the rest of you need to shut the **** up.

You dont even have a clue do you?
Ncdot has been trying to build the bridge for over 20 years. Blame the idiots wanting to protect birds over the livelihoods of the residents of Hatteras.
Southern enviromental law firm is responsible for suing the dot constantly to stop a replacement from being built unless it completely bypasses pea island with some crazy billion dollar 18 mile long design.

    /facepalm
