It was about 60 degrees today in Delaware, and its supposed to be in the upper 60s on Saturday. This is incredible! The has to be the mildest winter so far in my lifetime. While east coast surf has been mediocre so far this winter, at least those water temps are staying up there. The buoys in the mid atlantic are all in the low 50's, and even in northern new england, the water is staying in the mid 40's (which is down right balmy for them this time of year). As someone who studied climate, my answer to why we are seeing these above average temps is primarily due to the el nino influence this year. The press of course likes to cling to more dramatic phenomena like global warming. Any opinions?
No Complaints This is my first winter bodyboarding. I use to surf in the warm waters of Venezuela . I've invested on a 4/3 and some other winter gear (ie hood, gloves, etc.). The warm weather makes it very easy to change in the parking lot of Long Beach...Long Island that is...although it feels like California
An Inconvenient Truth I have surfed this entire winter with a 3/2 (NEW JERSEY). Last couple years in the winter...4/3. Before that, a 5/4. Next winter we could be surfing SS/FULLS. 2050, we could be surfing point breaks in times square, Chester, Chesapeake? Check out the Movie from Al Gore "An Inconvenient truth". It will sacre the Fu*k!nG $H!T out of you. And if it doesn't scare you, you SUCK! It may be an Inconvenient truth that wakes up everybody. Don't just whatch it either. Follow it up. If you are religous, praying won't help. Do something. If you drive a car, your part of the problem. If you live in a house. You are part of the problem. Basically, if you walk and talk and are not from a tribe in africa, your the problem. Sorry to give you these Inconvenient truths. G'Day mate!
i thought i remember the last time we had a strong el nino we had crazy snowstorms (98 i think?)...i could be wrong though. Kinda sucks for all the ski resorts in nj, ny state and the poconos and, of course, for anyone who enjoys these fine winter activities. If you have a newer 3/2 and wear a hotskin underneath, you may be warm for about an hour or so (in jerz at least). I just wish i didn't have to wear gloves. gloves suck. aren't cow farts one of the largest contributors to green house gasses and thus global warming?
cow farts....? lol. Since I never learned about the green house gas emition of cow farts in school, i checked out the first google result on the subject: http://www.show.me.uk/site/news/STO873.html if this is the case, i've been emmiting quite a bit of methane myself recently... But, even if green house gas emsion from animals is equal to that of human polution, there's a pretty significant difference. One has been occuring from the beginning of time (farts), and the other has increased exponentionally over the past century(pollution). That is a pretty interesting though - thanks beaner!
yah, thats the one thing i remember from studying environmental science in highschool. cow farts have heaps of methane in it. and yes, i agree that the last 100 years have dominated the ozone more than a cow with bad gas. on another note, i had a buddy visit illinois last week and, while he was there, he was fortunate to feed some cows. he said the gas they pass is absolutely rank. just wanted to share that with everyone on my lonely, lonely friday night...i wonder if the celing fan can hold my weight?
beaner - take some shots for us tomorrow if you get in! there should be a certain spot or two in your neck of the woods that should be fun with this steep s swell and sw winds. I'll try to get some shots of the big DE.
