the whole idea was that Cartel was going to take this event to the "next level" but their tactics are inept at best and have decidedly turn the entire local community against them. pretty terrible event management.
The pro surfing world has changed surfing with no doubt. I grew up across the bridge from Sandy Hook / Seabright NJ and there were no more than 5 surfers in the whole school back in the 70s early 80s. Pretty sure there are 50 "surfers" in a high school in the middle of Kansas today after commercialism and pro surfing has sold them the dream. The fact that there are surf schools making a living selling the experience on the east coast is reason enough to boycott the whole thing. It was really refreshing a few summers ago when I heard a father on the beach lamenting the fact that his daughter wanted to learn to surf. He said he didn't want her getting mixed up with those lazy do nothing hippie types. I was like "yes, finally we are getting back to normal" I mean I am a lazy do nothing hippie at heart, no offense taken.
