Anyone been up there lately? i.e. post Labor day? Coming down this weekend, trying to decide if we're gonna camp or just stay at Monkey Junction w\ friends. Crowds should have died down, but always a crap shoot on the N End with drunken rednecks. Just wondering if anyone has been up there on a weekend lately and how the crowds have been.

No biggie if we just stay at MJ, but I do love waking up on the beach and just grabbing a board and paddling out. That and the stars at 3AM on a clear fall night.

Don't paddle out without a trucker hat.

Nah If I'm going to kook out I'm going all the way. Gonna wear my old school Batman costume. Even have my Bat shark repellent.

You'll be fine, dude. It has thinned out a lot within the last few weeks, but you definitely won't be alone out there. If anything, there is always the South End (not WB).

Thanks guys...yeah I know it's a crap shoot on the N End but should be a lot thinner, although it gets overtaken by fishermen sometimes once fall hits. Didn't have any issues the last couple years, esp. if we can get the whole crew out, we'll have 3-4 trucks and can block off a section around the tents.

dlrouen - is the S end open for driving/surfing/camping? Last I checked it was open for fishing only, but that was in spring.

No camping or booze on Ft. Fisher... stupid ass state park rules.

Great place to fish and surf, though.

Good info on the South End - thanks, Erock.

I would definitely make an effort to camp out on the North End this weekend because there has been a lot of political talk lately about needed changes to help keep the park cleaner and safer. These changes may or may not affect camping, booze, boobs, surfing; but you never know. Personally, I think BIG changes are coming to the North End, so enjoy it while you still can.

I hope you have an awesome trip, tlokein.

Thanks Erock, good info. The no booze rule is tough, but I can be discreet. As for the rest of my crew...I doubt it. Last time I drive there you could only go about half way down though. I'll see if I can find out if you can drive all the way to the point now, would be a nice change of pace if we don't camp.

Mad Dog - I always wear my daisy duke overalls. Between that, the trucker hat, my knife, and my ear necklace I let people know I'm not to be trifled with.

dlrouen - as much as I abhor rules and regs I can say it wouldn't hurt a bit if they just enforced some common sense rules. Maybe let all the nut jobs go up the point where they can whoop it up all night long. That way I won't have to hit people over the head with a shovel when they stand outside my tent at 2am yelling for their buddy Bob. (I love my shovel...it's both a weapon and a destroyer of evidence...). And thanks for the positive vibe, as long as the weather cooperates it will be good times.

I just hope they don't start trying to turn it into WB...

Glad to give info on the area any time man!

Unfortunately, the more gentrified CB gets with rich out-of-towners the more it will turn into the clusterphuuk WB has become. All it takes is for 5 of them to claim permanent residency in CB then run for public office--exactly what happened to WB... although WB has been bs in regards to surf zones for decades, long before the carpet baggers took over the Board of Aldermen.

Erock - agreed. WB used to be a nice chill lil surf town 20 yrs ago. If you were local and didn't act the fool even the cops were chill...e.g. just telling ya to stop pi$$ing in the bushes and go back inside the party. Now they'd cuff and stuff you in a heartbeat.

I think (hope) there's just too many old salts, hippies, punks, and dirtbags like me still down in CB to let that happen.

Don't worry about me hanna, I tend to avoid the crowds and if I can't I'll bail before I run over someone. Not into hurting people if I can avoid it. And last thing I want is surf zones either.

We just got to keep reminding people about "the Buffer Zone" at the back side of Pleasure Island. Weapons caches, Neutron bombs, Nuclear Storage, man! They ship bombs all over the country from Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point.

"The Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point is the world's biggest military terminal."

That actually is pretty intense when you think half the island is off limits in case of a "military accident."

One of my fishing buddies is the captain of one of their patrol/assault boats.

As far as hitting tourists.... I just play a game where I try to grab the beer out of their hands before they get smashed by the wave I'm riding.

BUT, on the flip side, some of the tourons in CB deserve to be run over with something. I've never seen a larger group of classless slobs refusing to pick up after themselves than at CB... and there was that one guy who deliberately swam out in the middle of a contest and proceeded to yell at the contestants about how he has every right to be wherever he wants and how he was going to sue if someone tried to do something about it... phucking rednecks.

The people that live on CB quietly pick up the sh!t left behind by said classless slobs. last summer my wife and I pulled a pop up canopy out of the water that was in the impact zone just north of the pier. I'm always dragging out soaking wet sleeping bags. Those things way a TON when they are wet.

The locals definitely strive to keep it clean. When I see tourons leaving sh!t behind, I'll pick it up, chase them down and say "excuse me, I believe you left this." Their facial expressions are priceless.

Witnessed an awesome moment earlier this year. Redneck biker family parks next to us, dude's got his jeans, boots, and harley shirt on just so we're clear he's a tough guy biker on the beach. I paddle out and surf until the tide drops too low and when I come in I notice there's a whole bunch of Mickey D's super size meals laying in the sand out on the tide flats about to get washed away. I'm about to pick it up when a lady comes up with her 12 yr old son. She says (to my complete shock) that it was the redneck biker family's trash, then her son picks everything up, marches right up the beach, and hands it to the tough guy biker to the rampant applause of everyone around.

I had already started heading over in case he got nasty with the kid or the lady. I also noticed two of my friends had slipped in behind the guy. Big boys too, both of them are about 6'3" and 250+, and one trains in Muay Thai. Lucky for him all he did was give a sarcastic "thanks! 'preshadit!". They left soon after, so maybe there was a tiny bit of shame in his dirty soul.

The lady was local and said she never puts up with people trashing the beach. I may not be local but I've been coming to CB for decades, my Grandmother lived there, and my Dad lived there. I treat it like I live there. Even if that weren't the case I still can't stand it to see people trash the beach. Any beach for that matter. Respect, plain and simple. And props to the lady and the little man for not putting up with it.

Only thing that would have made it better would have been seeing my bro cave that scumbag's face in with some well placed knees and elbows.

It's not just the South End - it's the whole island. I don't know why the town continues to look the other way at situations - potentially hazardous - like this one. During the summer, a family renting the place next to me set up their camp site at the foot of my access. They left it there for the ENTIRE week and I had to literally squeeze between their massive Ohio State tent & the dunes to get around them. The first time I walked out, they actually told me to go find another access to use.

Anyway, the guards cannot say anything about the tents. The police are the ones who are supposed to take care of situations like that. Needless to say, situations like this tend to be overlooked on a regular basis; just like dogs being out on the beach during the summer season. Just a few weeks ago, I watched a cop drive right past a dude throwing a tennis ball to two dogs. Shortly afterward, one of the dogs took a solid dump that the owner did not pick up. Maybe a half hour later, the owner packed up and walked off the beach. I caught up with him and told him about the sh!t that was left behind. His explanation? "I don't have a bag" I told him to wait while I went to get one - he wasn't there when I returned.

Take a deep breath, DL. Remember that the town loves you and that your police force really needed that monster truck.

Then proceed to not keep up with your butts and they end up blowing away and in the lineup... or in some kids sand castle?!? For **** sakes stay home smoke breathers! Sorry for all the parlez francais but I just experienced this and am quite irate!
