I know there are quite a few guys on here who have 'hated' on the Brazilians in the ASP and I am guilty of the 'hating' as well....BUT, I am starting to like them more....? I think its the fact that they are so supportive of each other and so family oriented. Gabe's stepdad is a freaking nervous wreck every time Gabe surfs and it just how much they care for the sport and most of all the well-being of their family member. Also, they f***ing rip! I just love the air game, and after Teahupoo I think Gabe's all around game is beyond what I had previously thought. I will say, however, the style most of them have is not very appeasing but its comp surfing not video parts. Maybe I'm just tired of Kelly? Thoughts?
see the thing with the claims,u watch jjf hell do some spectacular impossible move and casually kick out. now when a Brazilian does an air,or wins a heat lol,its like that 1 surfer just gave brazil independence, they go crazy.that's why they claim, they feel like they just ended apartheid or something. gabs is great,im happy he lost early at trestles, give Kelly a chance for number 12.or would it be 13 I don't even know anymore.gabs is pretty well rounded,he surfs smart tho,he doesn't charge like everybody else,he picks and chooses his waves so he doesn't wipeout and get injured and lose his chance at the title.everything he does is calculated
go travel somewhere and surf with them at a break where you could get hurt if someone drops in on you
This is true. Was staying in El Salvador with a bunch of them and although there were a few that were really good, most of the others who were fearless and would drop in on anything, had the stink bug stance.
Ah good points with the stickbug stance and traveling. I have never surfed with a brazilian (I think) so I wouldn't know. I can imagine they are similar to some of the puerto rican bodyboarders (holy **** do I despise them!!!). John John is funny because he doesn't claim but it almost seems super cocky due to the fact that he rips so well. I still think the Brazzos wont have a title for a few more years. It seems like a good chance this year but I see JJF and Kelly (maybe Mick?) coming to Europe and winning then going on to destroy Pipe.
i have. i like them. if you speak any spanish you can understand their portuguesa... the brasileros i know would gang a break/thug the locals to a fist fight.....BUT would not drop in on a good surfer.
At Playa grande, CR a cpl years back, the policia had to come patrol town after a local/brazza conflict got out of control and led to credible death threats. fun seeing cops on the beach and hanging in front of the lodge
Yeah, I had the luxury of spending 10 years in a place that had a HUGE Brazilian and Portugese population. They have spent decades burning bridges in the water and expressing to the rest of the world that they have no etiquette and that they don't conform to internationally recognized basic surfing rules.... So yes, they have to fight off decades of bad press in the water. And I have witnessed this on a million occasions. I am not just one guy saying this. These are ideas that were grandfathered to me by live long locals. The OB Jetty sign up on the rocks was replaced with "NO BRAZILIANS" for almost 6 months. There is a reason for that. Get on the erBB website. Ask the Hawaiians, ask the Aussies. Ask anyone from CA. Brazilians have been KOOKS in the water for many years, and it has only been recently that these young tour pros have eliminated the stink-but (sometimes). Pupo was doing it on and off the whole trestles contest. Ugh. So, they still have a good 5 years of NOT being kooks in the water before people calm down and accept them into the inner circles. Not to mention, that not ONE Brazilian has put together a fine enough resume to win the tour. They win a big event here and there, but none of them are good enough and strong enough to rack up points all year and win the tour. If one of them can do that, then yeah, that deserves respect. But the claiming everything in the water: kooky. They have been doing that since the beginning of time. People have always laughed at them for this. Acting like winning Chopes somehow saved your impoverished nation: Kooky. Its just surfing my dudes. You didn't just win the world cup. The family stuff? Ugh. I guess you can call them family. Yeah, the one guys dad watches his heats. So does everyone else that is young on the tour. Those guys just have that creepy, south american pride thing, that is even stronger and stranger that a southerner's Alabama pride.... Summation: They are becoming less and less annoying, and that is only because they are actually surfing very well these days. But they have a long time, YEARS to make up for... And until they have a world title or two under their belts, I ain't trying to hear that. Look at it like this. Gabe is solid. JJF can do everything Gabe can do, just better and with way more style and grace. JJF just doesn't surf like the Hawaiian islands are going to sink if he doesn't win..... If those Brazzos don't win one this year or next, the whole world will eclipse them. Their big airs are not so big anymore. Everyone can do that.
This is way more important than the soap opera that is pro surfing I guess your'e a guy who likes watching things more than doing things? and Zach nailed it with this: They have spent decades burning bridges in the water and expressing to the rest of the world that they have no etiquette and that they don't conform to internationally recognized basic surfing rules....
Adriano is the only one I enjoy watching. The rest just know a lot of tricks, but usually look awkward going from one trick to another. Medina is still young though, but he's super talented, so I think his style will get better. Andy Irons didn't have great style either when he was young and eventually worked it out and became a world champion. I would still rather see someone like Parko surf in a movie than any Brazilian though. You can only see so many frontside reverses before they all start to look the same and get stale.
They're rude...and so are a lot of people in VB... Here is a question...they don't drop in on good surfers? So they judge as not good enough to respect, but you are better than them. So, they need to think that you are good enough by standards they have yet to achieve? I think its the "oh I never look before I drop in" thing that a lot of people say, but they usually roll deep therefore making them "tougher". Does anyone make metal fins? Just a thought...
A surf instructor in Hawaii told me that the Brazilians poop in the water. Haven't been a fan of them since hearing that.........
The surf world will end as we know it if the brazos win a tittle. I can only imagine how much greater they will think they are with that one. And whoever said they dont drop in on good surfers is full of sh!t. They drop in on any and everybody. They have a gang of their buddies out there so they dont care who gets mad at them.
u guys are just racist, nothing wrong with Brazilians.they drop in,so does everyone in nj.they can actually surf good.theyr just passionate people
Watching rather than doing? Not me man I've traveled many places, have a lot of hobbies, got a degree, got a Wildfire fighting certification, and now Im moving to CO to work on Keystone...I just haven't surfed with a brazilian.
This was kind of my thoughts exactly. Also the whole un-American Traitor thing just reminds me of what Republicans say when someone says they don't support the war(s).
hey ltm - u2 come caca....heres how it works, junior...if its them against us it goes bad but if you apply and are accepted into the group its the opposite. now uknow.
