checking yalls local beach water quality

America's waters (oceans) are not ok.
They're the furthest fuggin thing from ok (to paraphrase a Tarantino line).

They're a damn nightmare of eColi, staph, MRSA & freak show plagues that your local MD ain't gonna have a clue as to how to treat.

What's worse is that the beach cities keep this stuff hush-hush. Their goal is to keep the turistas flocking in, spending money, generating retail sales taxes for the local guv to keep the local people employed over those long no-turista winters.

50% of California's beaches are closed due to toxic pollution after any rainfall. And this is a first-world country...?
Hawaii has a long track record of being unable to process its own human waste. So, what do they do? Flush it straight into the ocean, unprocessed, untreated. People take home staph infections along with the aloha spirit.

Here's the hook: these tourism-based local economies know full well that all these visitors who have been sickened by dipping in their waters are never going to put 2 & 2 together and link up, join forces, demand that the money be spent on making sure the toxicity stops.

Nope. Those local municipalities are going to spend that money on inflated govt salaries & grotesque govt pensions, instead of doing what's right.

Ain't no conspiracy theory. It's reality, borne out by the increasing numbers of people faling ill after swimming in ocean water off American coastlines.

It's interesting to note that a few threads are about the beach restoration projects in Sandbridge Virginia and that the most recent water quality sample is from 2012..... before the restoration project.

Hate to flag the hippie flag; but get with your local surfrider chapter and see about water testing your own local breaks. To much bad crap in the Oceans that does not go reported until someone gets sick. I would hate to imagine what happened in the Gulf coast by un-biased reports on the water.

 

And let's not forget the mayor and city council turning over taxpayers' money to developers (who financed their elections & reelections) to fund highly questionable, private projects that benefit no one but themselves. All this when the city does not have enough money to adequately pay its school teachers. In VB, shaking down tourists for their revenue and paying off developers comes first.

 

While I agree that it is sad how many beaches have ecoli and staph issues, I don't really like that site from the OP. It has a star ranking system based entirely on their own standards, and has little to do with actual issues. My local beach hasn't had any samples come back higher than the national standard in 3 years, yet it is only a 3 star beach by their system. If the water has been relatively clean every time it is sampled, that matters to me more than anything else. I thought this site actually gave data from the tests performed, because that is what I would really like to see.

 

Sometimes I feel like you guys are a bunch of soccer moms. You hate drugs, love talking politics, and are terrified of everything.

I mean, surfrider is already in place, they already get my $45 (or whatever) a year. What else do ya want from me? Surfing makes me happy. If I get eaten by a shark, fine, chalk it up to the food chain. If I grow another head out there, fine, chalk it up to Darwin. Two heads are better than one. Try not to loose too much sleep over it.

Don't be upset your beach is ranked so low. It must be a conspiracy. They are lying about the tests. Somehow I knew you would question findings when they point out your beach is a crap hole.

 

Are you talking with Archy now? Sounds like all conspiracy. I thought brewman would question many of your points here and ask for facts and links to websites supporting these opinions.

 

Nice ignorant reply. Did you even read what I wrote? Did you even visit the site? Water quality reports are not a conspiracy. When beaches that fail 20% of the tests rank the same as beaches that never fail, I would say the ranking system is flawed. I would like to see actual data, not just the rankings.

Here's what I say. Who gives a crap what the tests say? We all know pollution is a real issue, anywhere in the world. We can't say any one area doesn't have it, cause humans are filthy creatures, and humans are everywhere. Let's just all agree to be less filthy humans and encourage everybody around us to be less filthy, and maybe as a result things will imrprove some. Maybe...

 

In Brews defense, ALL Engineers want to see the DATA. It's what they do. They analyze data. He's just doing what he's been trained to do. I talk to engineers all day long, and they all want is the data. It's just their nature.

 

Ya really. Thus my dislike of the star system. I also ask because I don't have a background in this sort of testing, and it would be nice to know what the "standard" is when looking at water test results. My guess is that the national standard still shows plenty of EColi and other fun bugs.
