Looking for some advice regarding a second board I am adding to start building a quiver. Pretty much decided on the CI Neckbeard(squash) after some pretty good feedback from a couple of buddies who are typically pretty critical when it comes to their boards. This will be my small/wave grovel board and I intend on using it in the typical weak, wind-chopped days in Florida. My other board is a 5'8' Lost V3 squash-it 5-fin custom shape that is pretty much spot on with the stock dimensions but just thinned out a little to bring down the total volume just a touch. Rides awesome in everything from waist high and bigger provided the wave has just a little bit of push to it. So, for me...I'm 5'6" and 150-155 lbs and would say I'm on the lower tier of advanced (no pro by any stretch of the imagination) and I am in great shape and above average paddler. Need suggestions on whether a stock dimension 5'6" or a 5'4" would be the better fit? To me it just seems like the 5'4" would be just too short. Does it make sense if I say I might mentally struggle with that? Just want some thoughts. I had always ridden a super thin, x-tra rocker HP board that was always between 5'11" - 6'1" and never had problems with surfing on them well. Back then I thought the 5'8" I mentioned earlier was too short and now that I 've been riding that I wonder what I had been missing out on all these years. Wondering if that might be the same issue with the Neckbeard. So there it is...any suggestions from the readership...perhaps someone close to my weight/size who rides a neckbeard (squash)? Thanks so much. Jeff

    Firm...but fair requests

    DawnPatrolSUP and Zeroevol,
Great points! I deserved that....where are my manners??? Grammatically, I will diligently pursue my use of paragraphs as well. So, I am a US Navy Command Master Chief stationed on the USS SAMPSON (DDG 102). We are currently on the 6th month of a 7 month deployment and I am floating somewhere in the South China Sea this very moment.
Grew up in Ormond Beach, Florida and joined Navy at 19. Been in San Diego ever since (26+ yrs) but upon my return from deployment I will be stationed up in Jacksonville for my last 3 years to bring me to 30 and retirement and to my next career as a surf bum.
Very familiar with Florida waves since I grew up in em'. My V3 works great in San Diego but I know I'm going to need something that will float and ride me a little better in the gutless stuff. Just wanted a couple of suggestions on the height since this will be a new surf experience for me as far as type of board.
By the way, I don't bench (if you mean weights...push-up, sit-up guy), my girlfriend is short and believe it or not I do surf...still addicted like the grommet I was when I first started.
Hopefully, I have gotten through the gauntlet (my forum bedside manner was atrocious). Hope I have reconciled my situation and I am ok with being the "new guy". Jeff

I'm also 5'6 about 145-150 lbs. I ride a 5'6 disco 24L with a full suit. It floats me perfectly with a 5/4 on. In the summer I ride a 5'6 super spv 22.7L and a 5'8 DFR 23.2L The DFR floats me perfecrly.

My friend has a neck beard and he hates it.

Welcome, sir! My dad is retired Coast Guard and also was stationed in San Diego at Point Loma. San Diego is the tits! Good fishing, surfing, food, etc!!
I have a 6'0" Neckbeard that has too many liters for me. I also just got a 5'10" V3, it is friggin amazing!!! I have mine set up as a quad. If your V3 is working for you, try to match the neckbeard up in liters to the V3.

Z- what are the dims/liters of the 6'0"? What's your height/weight? I have never tried a neckbeard but my friend says it is the best board he has ever ridden (his is 5'8" I think).

^^^ Spot on new guy---- do you just go up to a group of complete strangers having a conversation and butt in and ask for advice on something random. A hello thread is customary round these parts. Be sure to include your origin story, any STD's you've had, and pics of your GF.

You're my height. If you'd never ridden a board shorter than you before, try it. Borrow a baked potato. Its so much fun, there is no little-dude shuffle whatsoever. You're always in the right spot.

Its all about volume. Go to the lost site and check your guild factor. And be honest. Before you rate your skills, watch a few surf videos. And ask yourself, how good am I in the crappiest conditions you will take this board out in. Everybody is a pro in their ideal conditions. How good are you when its not.

    Jay, the board is 6'0"- 20 1/4 - 2 5/8 - 35.5L. I am 5'11" 185lbs, it was just too many liters for me.

    Dear mr navy Jeff,

Welcome to swell info and thanks for the short introduction. If you would really like to be part of the surf crew here (and I would suggest that you would be!) it would be wise to:

    1. Start a hello thread. It will be a good indicator if your accepted by the guys. You know... Hazing and all.

    2. StArt practicing your bench pressing. There happens to be at Bench Off Bench Mark compition coming up in BELMAR- and your expected to participate to represent swellinfo.com

    http://npcnewsonline.com/infinite-labs-‎juggernaut-nation-bench-press-competition/166594/

Btw- have you ever surfed the BELMAR?

    Your pal,
    mr BELMAR

If in doubt, I'd go with the slightly bigger board.

    You are over thinking it.

Just get a sweet board that you like and have fun.

My advice is go bigger especially with a groveler. 5'9. 6'0. My buddy is your size and never rides his 5'6 or 5'8 or whatever neckbeard. You gotta go bigger with a groveler don't listen to dah pros. If you don't take my advice you will regret it.

    Go big. Love dah foam.

    Listen to boobiesonics.
