If you're into NetFlix (no, I'm not a salesman for them) you might want to rent "Sprout" by Tom Campbell. Lots of gorgeous photography of both good size waves and little mini waves being ridden by highly talented longboarders and some quality footage of Mike Stewart and company at Pipe both bodysurfing and bodyboarding. Not by any means a "Raging" Bull in the realm of surf films, but a mellow time spent with quality images and quality riders. Well worth the rental, and ironically sponsored by Converse. Who probably figures that surfers don't ALWAYS go barefoot.
It's actually Thomas Campbell. He's an artist, filmmaker, writer, and runs his own record label. He also directed The Seedling and he has a new one coming out soon. I would say that it is the "Raging Bull" of modern longboarding movies. There is some great footage of alternative shapes, fish and bonzers, but it's primarily longboarding, and amazing longboarding at that. Woodshed films (Emmet Malloy, cousin of the Malloy brothers) has put out a long run of great surf films, September Sessions, Thicker Than Water, Shelter, etc... and Sprout fits right into their free surf, spiritual style that is welcome departure from the high intensity Taylor Steele style movie. Not that I don't like the Poor Specimen stuff, but the style of the Woodshed stuff is nice to chill out to.
