Are Coffins (multiple bag bags) heat retardant? If I have a coffin in the back of my car and it heats up on the drive am I going to end up with wax all over the inside of the coffin? Yes I know I can just get a board bag, but I'm not driving or surfing solo and if I have the option of owning 2 boardbags and eventually having to buy a coffin vs having one boardbag and one coffin - having 1bb and 1coffin makes sense... if the coffin is heat retardant. Thoughts. Yeah I know I haven't put of shots of the "Rhino Chaser", new shortboard and handmade longboard(skateboard). Promise they're coming. I also have a board that I RE-laminated an entire sqft. it's been out in the water and held up. looks like a ugly duckling but who cares. I'll put a shot of the ugly one up as well.
I've taken an Ocean Earth coffin loaded with boards on many trips to the DR, Barbados, Hawaii & Nicaragua. Wax on boards didn't melt off but it did get affected in terms of mushing out a bit. That includes many hours in the cargo holds of the planes, the coffin spending some time sitting waiting on blazing tarmacs & 3-hour car journeys from MGA to the Pacific coast. Sometimes my boards didn't survive the AA baggage chimps. But the wax was ok. BTW, you didn't ask, and you may already do this, but the non-sticky pipe wrap insulation that one can buy at Home Depot is a pretty good rail protector. I use the painter's blue tape to hold it in place 'cause the blue tape doesn't leave marks on the sticks. A a thin layer of cardboard over the top board's deck spreads the impact of those heavy suitcase corners that the baggage chimps pitch in on top of the coffin in the baggage hold.
Eventually, the bag & it's contents will reach the same temperature as it's environment. The type & amount of material (acting as insulation) will dictate the amount of time it takes to get there. I don't believe there is such a thing as a "heat retardant" bag." That being said, some bags use a reflective material to help reduce the impact of the sun, in regards to heat. So....whatever tempurature your car is, the inside of any bag will eventually reach that tempurature, given that it's in the car. Keep the car cool & the wax won't melt. If the bag is outside the car & sitting in the direct sun, the wax stands a good chance of melting. The reflective material may prevent it from getting as hot as a dark-colored bag, but whether it reaches tempuratures that will melt wax is speculation.
Leaving borads in a car for long time in the heat is bad idea period due to the fact that it can cause delams to happen. A coffin wont help disperse the heat any better than a couple of day bags. The thing i hate the most though is wax melted on my board bag then spreads all over your board. Anyway you dont need a coffin to go surf your local beach break. FInd a $50 daybag and your good, heat retardation will be the same between the daybag and the coffin for the most part, plus using a 6'8 coffin to lug a 6' shortboard around is just bulky and no real advantage for ya.
You could try packing the day bag with dry ice, or if you're feeling frisky, liquid nitrogen. melting wax problem solved!
