Alright buoys (and Bretana if you see this I'm single),

Ride report after this weekend of some pretty good surf....

This board may be the best board I've ridden to date. Extremely fast and responsive, light but handled the wind and bigger surf just fine. Also put in large FCS-2 Carver fins and they fell great.

And fate would have it that Monday morning when I took it out that I ran into the guy who put it up for sale in the water. No repairs minus that one on the rail I posted. Stoked I scored a Coil in such good shape for such a good price! The only complaint I have is that it takes a bit of work to paddle into weak waves but honestly in good surf it kicked ass. Really think I'm gonna get an equalizer for big hollow surf when money allows.

    Yeah BUOY!!!!

    Love to hear this schitt!!!

Makes me want to be back east on my Megamind. Finally started dialing that thing in proper this summah but left it at mom's cribby. No way I was having that thing dinged in transit. Dinged, dung...is the past tense of ding really "dinged" or is it "dung"?? LOLZ

How do you like those FCS2 Carvers? I have those in my pintail Rusty Blackbird. Pretty dope...buttt one of them dislodged itself in a larger OH low back east in September. It was the side fin so instead of going asymetric finned I pulled out the other side, threw it in my chest zip and went single fin lol

Any more technical details on the ride and all that? Did you feel the board was heavy on rider input as most do?

Nice report. Just curious, what kind of tail do you have on yours? Small swallow?

I still love mine. It's name is a bit misleading in my opinion. It's alot more "shortboardish" than what you think of as a fish. As a result, it handles bigger waves quite well. I generally only pull mine out if it's chest or better with some punch.

+1 I like mine in anything waist high or bigger, but it really excels with a nice size wave behind it, I run large FCS MF-1's as a thruster right now and loving it, drop in big bottom turns, can really push off and it holds well but it's not stiff and tracky so can get vertical for a big top turn too no problem. So much fun if i'm in the rhythm and linking them together and beating sections, which again, I have to find that rhythm.

Would you love your board more if it had a vagina?? Sounds like it by the way you talk about it. Do you even like girls??

I prefer mine as a quad if i ride it in smaller surf. Big MR finds up front, with small trailers (GX I think). However in bigger nice surf, that configuration becomes a handful. I switch to a Tri setup or twin plus trailer even though the rear fin spacing is for a standard tri.

I had mine shaped with a round-tail. I feel like it's more of a short-board with a little extra width in the nose and tail. The board is still quite foiled in the tail and the rails pretty Knifey out back. To me it's a Perfect board for the average guy to surf high performance in smaller surf, or for a bigger guy (me) to surf as a normal short-board without having to go for a lot of extra length. If I go to a regular shortboard these days, it would have to be another 6" longer, and then it just gets odd with foot placement. I have to shuffle fore and aft. The length of this one minimizes that, although at 6'5" I still tend to move fore and aft a bit.

I'm also a bit front footed with a skatey style. I surf very "down the line" and this board fits the bill. For someone more back footed, with a hacking style, something like a Coil Widerboard would probably be a better fit for similar use.

I really like the coils. They've also moved away from the "kick dimpled tech" they were doing for a while and now they are doing smooth tech. All three of mine are holding up remarkably well (2 OG smooth and one dimpled), but I'm pretty far into weekend warrior status these days so I don't use them as much as I want to.

I'm trying to get in touch with Kirk to setup a pick up time for my new M-80, rounded tail, haven't seen it yet, hope to pick her up today or tomorrow. Will report back soon, pics to follow.

I love my flashback round-tail. We just understand one another.

I got a Widerboard squash tail a little bit over a year after the flashback. Love her too, but the connection isn't as deep. It's weird though, I feel like I surf better backside on the widerboard than the flashback.

Thanks for all the input guys. Yes it is a rounded tail with a 5 fin convertible set up. I really haven't noticed a heavier feel to it yet. It's really light and fast from what I've experienced so far. Really enjoy how sharp the rail work is on the board considering the width. The dimensions on it are 5'10", 20.5 wide and 2 5/8 thick. And I agree, it really does have more of a short board feel to it. I've never had a board where I can lay the board on rail on my frontside before this board. This board was made with the dimple tech but I think it really is a cool feature.

Have they said why they are moving away from it?

As far as the fins go, I think I'm going to stick to large fins from now on. There's just so much more drive I can get out of them than other fun templates I've tried out. In Virginia beach you really have to struggle to get speed on waves on most days but with this fin and board combo I don't think I'll have to worry about that as much. This thing is going to be my all round short board in most conditions for around here I think. I really stoked I've found a short board that is so versatile.

And yes I meant qualifier. Sorry about that.

Not 100% sure on this but I think you have the option for either, but don't quote me on that. My FBF is with "kick technology" and I dig it, but I opted for smooth on the M-80, to have one of each for comparison.

I think you're right. I think the new smooth tech is optional. I'm guessing demand pushed them back to doing a smooth finish. I think some people just had a tough time accepting the golf ball like texture on kick tech. I admit, I didn't really want it at first, but when I ordered my last one, that's the only finish they were doing. Turns out that board is super light and fast, so I'm cool with it.

I'll probably go back to the smooth tech on my next one though. The new smooth is supposed to be as light and strong as the dimpled kick tech is.

    Exactly my thoughts as well.
