i wanna know where you surf there. Last winter the water hit 37 F at the nags head pier. Don't tell me it doesn't get cold, unless you think all of NOAA's buoys are off.

I'm guessing Wrightsville area, I don't remember ever wearing a hood when I lived in Wilmington.

Water temp (around 49) hasn't been the real issue here (VB). It's been the lack ride-able waves for a week and a half. Been swimming laps in an effort to stay in some kind of paddling shape.
Hopefully, there's a bit of swell heading our way soon.

Looks like Tuesday and Thursday will be decent. A little swell for Baby Jesus' birfday never hurts!

    Yo, man!
Hittin' it tomorrow. Maybe Wed., depending on thunderstorms. Squeeze in some nooners during lunch. Got work today and tomorrow at Dam Neck. Been too long since last time out - almost 2 weeks.
An X-mas sesh would be a tough one to pull off with all the family and festivities here. Later in week perhaps.
    Swimming laps again today.

It's been a while back, but I actually stopped surfing in the winter and would snowboard. Then I realized how much I missed the freezing winds and how when the water hits my face it feels like knives stabbing me. Standing in the parking lot trying to get out of my suit in 30 degree weather, wondering where in the hell my weiner disappeared to. HA HA, I seriously did miss it.

yea I'm not bout to read all deez posts guys. but I've been trooping it to hatteras for years. two winters of 10/'11 and '11/'12 had water temps dip down to 30 degrees. I didn't even know it until then, but salt water can actually get COLDER than FREEZING because of the salinity.
and it can't get much colder than that..
but i'll give it any of you bubs up in jerzz dealing with that retardo air temp.
seriously. props to you. granted, seems like it's more of a shorebreak wave up there so I'd hope y'all are at least duckdiving a little less.
but don't knock the obx... this **** is undoubtedly cold by any standards...

go make fun of Floridians. they're always cold.

I'm with you on Tuesday. Think I will just dp it and go to work late, and work late too. I think I may be able to sneak in a christmas day session when my daughter goes down for her morning nap, before all the family stuff starts. it's been entirely too long since we've had a decent swell, so I am all about getting wet

I broke out the 4/3 today for the first time. I actually rocked boots, gloves and a hood too. All brand new rubber except for the hood. I didn't know it was the first official day of winter but that seems fitting now. The water was only mid 50's but I planned on surfing for a while and there was zero sun with pretty cold air temps. I will admit it's a pain putting everything on, icecream headaches and taking everything off but for the solitude and the consistantly better waves it makes it all worth while. If I had to make a pick between that or the zoo my town becomes during the summer (although I desperately miss trunking it) I'm almost leaning towards winter time now. Not the OBX winter but the little further SNC winter. I'd have to invest in a really good 5/4/3 if I lived there. That dude doesn't have a clue!

Looks like we have a little bump today. Went to check the water temps, and dayum, that sh!t got cold quick! It was in the low 50's a week or two ago. What the hell?

I was refering to SE nc like from Emerald Isle Down. OBX gets frigiiiid but i reiterate for my 5 years living down in North Carolina excluding trips the banks in Dec- March I never felt it necessary to rock a hood. Maybe cause i was used to doning the 6 mil up in New England, and maybe because my hood on my ****ty ass 4/3 was not attached. The lowest water temps Ive seen down in the southern part of north carolina was the low 40's.

until you have ice forming on your face I don't want to hear that you're "cold." if facing the air/water temps wasn't worth catching waves we wouldn't be doing it
