You have never seen so many really hot birds in one place ever. Would even call it epic on the mating grounds scale. Really fun place but the washout (or the "watchout!" as we have been calling it) is the only fun and punchy beach break worth a crap. But it does get fun and fairly consistent on the north end of Folly. The other beaches nearby can get fun but only seldom and are really suited for log, a fish or a soft wave stick. Brownest water you will ever surf in. Somedays the same color as your sweet tea. Some one correct me if I'm wrong but aren't they scheduled for beach renourishment soon? What that does to the watchout I am not sure.
Dude, go to the University of North Carolina - Wilimington. Ax Erock aboot his rental units..... Seriously dude, pick a school near quality thump bubs. I know who you are, man. Don't abandon Seaside for Folly. Take advantage of your young, reckless youth, and surf the best waves you can. Look how depressed Zach 619 is after moving to South Carolina. I'm worried he may start hanging in the ghetto just for some kicks. The waves just aren't stimulating him there. Seriously, don't waste your prime surfing years doing the honneyton hop on two foot mushburgers. You'll never get these days back where your body is at it's peak, and your fear level is below zero. Charleston is more of an older person's place. And don't buy the regional girl thing. There's a million good looking girls everywhere especially at college or as Canadians call it - university. We call both colleges and universities - "college." Other parts of the globe make the distinction. Your welcome.
Yeah they're supposed to start pumping sand on Folly any day now, don't know how it will affect the washout, but yesterday was fun. It is still super inconsistent compared to about anywhere else on the EC, I would say on average its waist+ about 4-5 days out of every 3 weeks, depending on the season. Although there are many other activities to spend your time doing.
I went to the "College of Knowledge" for 2 semesters before joining the marine corps. I was too young and too stupid to get past partying and beautiful girls and my parents were not paying partial tuition for d grades. Glad they didn't because joining the corps was the best route for me. But folly beach was mostly small but got good swells off the right storms just like any east coast break does. If you go, enjoy the women, waves, and weather but don't be like me...unless you aspire to be a combat marine veteran with serious issues. Just kidding, im fine...most of the time.
I went there for a year. It's a really tough school, so it's actually a good thing the waves aren't good more often...you'll need to study your ass off to make it there. As for the waves, you basically have the pier and the washout jetties. The pier can get a fun long left off the south side and the washout has a couple of shorter punchy peaks off the south side of each (jetties are mostly submerged, so no wind blockage).
Stop saying that. The washout is not the only punchy break. It may be the best break on Folly, but I have found spots on IOP that have similar size and punch. They do break a bit more shallow though. As I have said before, and Clemson agreed, Folly is not a special surf area. IOP and even parts of Kiawah get the same damn waves. The only place that gets shafted is Sullivan's, and that is only due to the direction of the swell and the placement of the jetties.
garbanzobean - so these wahines are consistently exceptional even on the Southern scale (measured from the backside of their wave)? What's the male-female ratio at C of C? Mattyb - what's the name if your book again? Tried the search tab but couldn't find it in earlier threads. I want to pick up a copy.
To the OP, CofC is a decent liberal arts school, and Charleston area is probably my favorite place on the east coast. We have awesome food everywhere, lots of women, great beer, and fun bars. There are waves to be had on many spots on the islands. Folly has the washout, which is the steepest wave on the island. The pier is a longer and gentler wave, but that spot tends to have more to offer when there are huge hurricane swells. Folly also has 9th st E and W, which can be decent. There is another new spot worth checking out, but I will let you find it on your own. Kiawah has a public park, which is a lot like the Folly pier in regards to waves. There are a few other spots north of there, but they are in the private part of the island and are a pain to get to. IOP's most popular spot is the pier or 9th st. That spot is again closer to the gentle Folly pier waves. There are steeper spots north on the island, but I am not going to give them away (very unpopulated and local). I have been to Capers many times by boat, and saw some decent waves there. The trees under water make that island slightly dangerous for surfing. However, people have still done it. Sullivan's sucks because of its position. Burt's used to work well there, but I haven't seen much there in the last couple years. I do know some guys that surf there, though I am not sure where they are hitting. That pretty much covers the area. We are not as good or consistent as NC, but the Charleston area has some of the best waves in the state. Don't listen to anyone that says we only have the washout. I know many experience short boarders that spend most of their days out on IOP. If you end up moving here, send me a message and I can give some tips.
Ignorance is bliss. If you don't know the quality of the souther girls in charleston, it is better to just stay in your area. Remember, cold weather girls need extra fat to stay warm in the winter. It doesn't get that cold down here, so fat isn't needed.
