Heres the lowdown Im about to be heading into my sophomore year at a community college in the great ole armpit state (NJ) and wanting to transfer out next year. currently studying criminal justice but my mind keeps telling me do marine biology or something environmental related with our big ole beautiful planet. Here is the dilemma I cannot imagine myself more than an hour away from the beach so when transferring next year my focus is defiantly picking a school near the beach with decent surf (Im from jersey so clean chest high being the norm is considered more than decent).....

anyways whats your guys recommendations on good surf schools, where'd you guys go? what'd you study? Do you study stuff that relates to surfing or any aspect that is involved in surfing? etc etc throw it all out there

Go to an in-state school and you could go on three surf trips a year to world-class destinations and the cost of that won't even compare to how much you'll owe The Man in student loans when you finally get out of school, park yourself at a desk where you hardly make enough money to cover your expenses, and eventually have to go back to grad school anyways because they hand out degrees like candy to any unsuspecting fool.

    Run-on sentence of the decade?

    agreed. UH-Manoa.

Not same academic caliber of these east coast schools for most of the programs if that's a priority for you, but considering this is a surf forum: a ton of south shore spots are biking distance, walking distance if you're ambitious. pick up an old toyota for grand, and cruise to the north shore in 50 min, west side in an hour.

also, dimes all over that campus and the other colleges there... plus lots of night time fun to be had in waikiki and downtown honolulu.

I went to Stockton after 2 years at Brookdale. Surfed my face off whenever there was waves!

Best decision I ever made. While I was studying business admin/Marketing I figured out a way to beat the casinos (Video roulette). I took $32K over two months - before they figured me out.
Finished my degree. Worked at the property I took the most money from for a few years and moved to San Diego

    *Results may vary

There's been lot's of discussion on this ... here is a couple of many threads the highly configurable search function will find (it shreds buoys!):

Dial in your gifts and passion. I other words, determine what are natural abilities and what is your passion. Find convergence/intersection. Then, locate a school that will give you the skills you need at a price you can afford.

This doesn't always work, as there are pragmatic considerations. You shouldn't necessarily have to "love" your career, but perhaps be thankful for the opportunity. There is something to be said for a career that supports your survival and auxiliary pursuits with a grateful attitude.

Oh, and if you believe in God, keep Him in the loop and be sensitive to His leading. Think convergence.

I went to a small college called The Citadel. Don't go there.

UNCW if you want decent waves, short(ish) trips to the Outer Banks.

If you are thinking of doing a Marine Biology degree, you have to keep in mind that your schooling will not stop after getting a BS. If you want to be a real success in this area you have to go to graduate school and continue into getting a Doctorate.

Basically after getting your BS, you will have to decide what animal you want to study and then find the premier Doctor that is studying that animal and be his or her understudy at whatever school they are affiliated with. Its a long commitment but you will learn soooo much about our oceans, its a life long love fest with mother earth….go for it!

BS in marine biology is almost worthless
Florida tech is not bad, very good sci programs. but Florida is meh, its like a culturally devoid wasteland of conservatism and idiots, with pockets of sluts. thank god for those pockets
UH Manoa, but its a big move

and why the change from criminal justice, you realize you arent a insecure frustrated bully looking to have a career in law enforecment?
