The southern hemisphere season is just getting started which means days of consistent head high surf in places such as Playa Hermosa. If you've never been you gotta go and check it out......you won't be disappointed! Pura Vida!
Been down there three times in the Jan/Feb time frame. We hit Tamarindo (and Ollie's) twice & Jaco once. Unfortunately, it wasn't really consistant. I've trying to find the place that we stayed (when in Jaco) online, but no luck. I think it was the Iguana Inn or Hotel??? It was on the beach about 1 mile south of Jaco proper and had a decent break right in front of it when the wind was right. Otherwise, it was closing out. We drove along the cost and it was doing it at every location. Any idea's of the name of this hotel? Thanks.
looking to go this year around that time..jan-feb for a week. I have a two year old with my mrs.. Whats the easiest in and out of the airport for waves and beach and a little one? I know the water will be warm, and there will be rideable waves. BUT what is the consistancy? Will I have a week of tube rides? thanks for the 411.
You might wanna fly to Liberia, it' an international airport in the Northwest and closer to the beach then flying into San Jose. But I like central and south and cheaper flights so I always fly in and out of San Jose. Jaco is the closest surf town to SJO,(they're building a highway through the moutains that will cut the ride to a bout an hour but not sure if it will be open by Jan next year.) If you do go out of San Jose my advice is to stay away from Jaco (its not the kind of beach you just wanna walk with the fam at night), go to Hermosa just south, much more laid back vibe and the place I'm guessing Ray B was talking about. Jaco is famous for drugs and whores, too early for a two year old. Pura Vida
This is correct...all of it. You'll drive through Jaco and see that it's not a family-friendly environment after dark. Playa Hermosa is where we stayed (and where I'd like to return). Apparently, if there's waves anywhere on the west coast of Costa, Playa Hermosa will see them.
I was down there in May...beginning of the southern hemi season. We stayed in a really nice development called Hermosa Palms which is right on the beach and has a killer pool sitting right on the beach. The house we stayed in is here: http://www.vrbo.com/188076 VERY nice house across the street from the beach and reasonable rates. You can check the surf from the balcony on the top floor. There were 3 couples staying there and it was nice. Cooked our own food and relaxed at the pool when we weren't surfing. Its also right next to a good break called Corners, but in Hermosa, when its up, you can always find an empty peak. We had a few days of really southern swell which caused Hermosa to close out so we drove up to a rivermouth point break called Boca Barranca. When its big and closing out in Hermosa, Boca Barranca is going to be firing. We caught it a few feet overhead and peeling lefts for hundreds of yards. Jaco is a dirty town....Hermosa is so much more peaceful and easy going. Can't wait to go back.
