If you've got some dough to throw around family friendly safe and ridiculously nice place to stay is Marriott Los Suenos its like five minutes from Jaco and ten maybe fifteen minutes from Hermosa and has a decently priced taxi service to get you there if you dont rent a car check it out it

I stayed at the Backyard hotel a few years back it is perfect. Literally 3 steps to the surf and very inexpensive you can get a sweet for cheap which would be good for 3 people. Be prepared the town of Hermosa is a tad sketchy plenty of prosititues so may want to warn the wife so she isn't alarmed. Easy to avoid just something to be aware of...surf is great and there is plenty else to do for the rest of the family.

HAHAHA. Hermosa is a tiny little quiet strip of beach didn't see any hookers. You have to be thinking about Jaco the only thing anyone ever said to us in Jaco was "You need cocaine?"

I used to love Dominical. I had not been there is probably 6 years and went back this past August. Granted we were only there for a few hours and it was the rainy season, but the beach and water was horrible. I have never seen so much debree (wood and other crap, not trash) on a beach in my life. They used to maintain the beach, not sure if they have stopped due to the economy or what. I am not sure I will ever return.
Depends on what you are looking for, and how long you are going. You can have fun in Hermosa, and you will not have a problem seeing prostitutes walking around during the day, but you may have some drug offers in Jaco, but Hermosa is mellow. I personally would recommend some place comlettely different, and splitting your time between at least two places. PM me if you want and I can give you some ideas, I know the country pretty well and there is tons to see/do.

PM me if you decide on hermosa. the breaks by the hotels are ok but not the best in that area.

it should be clean and waist plus every day. That time frame is the smallest for CR but the weather is the best.

I go to Hermosa every year. Hermosa Palms is a gated private residence about a km south of El Mendro. You can rent these homes from the owners cheaply. Most are 3-4 bedrooms though, and I know you said it was only you, wife and child. Just something to think about if you wanted to bring a friend or two. Safe, guarded 24-7, great managment , beautiful homes with all the empty peaks you want right out front. Bout $150/night. Let me know if you want more info.

    Sand PIpper Inn in Hermosa.

The owner (Greg) stays on the grounds and he is a avid surfer (he will even come pick you up at the airport). The cam on surfline for Hermosa is actually hanging off his house. There is also a local guy who stays with him and knows CR like the back of his hand. We went on a trip with him up to Boca B one of the days and it was going off. Great people there and it is much cheaper than the backyard hotel which is right down the road. The good thing about the backyard they have ladies night ever Wed. (I think that is the day) and it gets packed with some really nice poon. Only 3 bucks to get in. (not that you would be looking for it with the kid and wife....

I recommend Sand Pipper and the next time I go back to Hermosa it will be there.

P.S. The French bartender that works at the hotel restaurant is SMOKING HOT!!!!

Dude.. Jaco is a bullseye for trouble. If you ever hear somebody talking about a horrible experience regarding police, drugs, prostitution, stealing, robbing, or raw sewage being pumped into the ocean there is a 99% chance they are talking about Jaco.
Jaco was nice... until around 1990ish... even maybe up to the mid 90's. Since then it has been in the decline and has fallen apart completely in the last couple of years.
The last place I would bring a family to.

Oh, and I am completly a hellraiser, btw. I have no trouble throwing back the brews and getting into trouble at all, but that's not why I travel. I like to surf and spend time with my family & friends in a low key manner when I'm in other countries.

I WOULD highly recommend to the SandPiper Inn like JMD said. You will find plenty of surf and the owner is an awesome guy from South Bay out here in LA. I have friends who are good friends with the owner. Great location, very family friendly, and plenty of things to keep everybody busy while you steal some time away to go surf.

Damn JMD, that's funny you brought that place up. That's the first place I thought of when reading the original question posted by motion.

Small world we live in.
