Would you rather surf a foot smaller of a wave with only a few guys out, or surf a wave that is a little bigger but is 3 times as crowded Hopefully i'm not the only person that would rather have the first option.
Depends on my mood. I've been in a "I'll run your ass over" mood lately, so I'll take the crowded larger surf. Can't wait to see if Friday or Saturday get decent... UNCW is on summer break, so there's going to be plenty of speed bumps out there littering the impact zone. KOOK CONFETTI TIME!
Hey, at least it is surf related and not some more conspiracy crap. But yeah, kinda worn out topic. Myself, I already surf waves anywhere from 1 to 23 feet smaller than everybody else in way south Florida and crowds are the least of my worries.
Seems like I'm not the surfer most claim to be here on this forum , so with that being said and knowing I prefer less crowded breaks I choose smaller less crowded. For the 100,000 time
Yeahh sweet, my bad for asking the 100,000 time and yeah well in Florida its get i little nasty after longg flat spells, So just wondering. Sorryagain
No worries, it's just a topic that comes up on here quite often! How about a medium wave mildy crowded with everyone taking turns?
Around here, "a foot smaller" for the next three months means knee high slop, as opposed to waist high and ok. I usually pick the waist high waves and just deal with the fact that crowds happen, and just try to get in the water early and avoid peak times. The other thing is....more times than not i have found that with a little bit of effort its possible to find relatively uncrowded waves without sacrificing the size and quality. People tend to flock to the known spots, cameras, and easily checked spots. That fact can be used to your advantage. Even in the crowded season.
Surf instructors properly teach beginners and groms how to jump off the back of the board safely. But they should teach beginners (especially heavy adults who can afford 10 ft. classic longboards) how to bail when they are riding the white water straight in at Mach3 and a bunch of guys are paddling right at them. Kicking your board straight out as you demonstrate a proper butt flop isn't the best option. Maybe they should teach how to surf where no one else is.
Crowds are good practice..like manuvering through cones on a raceway. Most moods I'm not into crowds, unless I know a few people at that spot at the time, than we can keep it fun. But people laying on their boards floating like buoys? No thanks
Im someone that always runs to the smaller uncrowded spots. Mitchell has gotten me into a few of the more popular breaks lately and I have to say even though it looks crowded to me from the beach I have been able to do ok and still catch a few without much hassle.
Speaking of crowds, don't call and text all your friends when its good. With all the resources today if you can't figure out the surf will be good, you deserve to miss it. Sometimes I hate technology.
I used to surf TI when I lived in West Florida. I feel your pain. I know a few spots that fire when the hoards are at TI. PM me and I'll hook you up.
I used to sweat the crowds when I first moved to Jax. Now I know a bunch of the guys when I paddle out, so it's not crowds so much as meeting up with friends and acquaintances. That being said, when school lets out, game over. Oh yeah, congratulations on being the 1 millionth person to post about crowds Waternerd. At least you owned it.
