Just watched this on my lunch break. Pretty cool. http://www.santacruzwaves.com/videos/curt-the-story-of-surfings-oldest-grom/
"CURT is a short documentary about 50-year-old competitive surfer, Curt Harper. Diagnosed with autism as a child, Curt faced many challenges growing up, but one thing that came easy was his love for surfing. “Every generation of groms has grown up with Curt,” says Dane Reynolds. Over the past 21 years, Curt has become a beloved fixture in the Southern California surf scene, having played an unlikely, yet vital role in the growth and development of multiple generations of groms. For them, he’s someone that loves surfing as much as they do. He’s someone they can trust. And most of all, Curt Harper is a friend."
Scobey: I don't know how you found that vid, but I'm glad you did. Really enjoyed it. Thanks. We have a special needs child. She's 18, but mentally will probably remain at the 11 or 12 year old level. Curt's positive attitude and genuine love for surfing, people, and life in general are refreshing and inspiring. Having lived in So Calif for many years, I recognized most of the locations.
Also really enjoyed the vid of Curt. Surprised, in a positive way, to see Dane Reynold in there. As for you, DosXX: You & your fam are truly special & amazing; many would have given up on such a situation; always thought your posts were a bit deeper & better than most; I'm correct on that note because you & your fam are extraordinary. Many people yak about good deeds or whatever. You & your fam are living it. Good stuff.
Thanks for sharing this vid!!! I found myself smiling through out the whole thing, great way to start my day! I am a 12 year Lewes Polar Bear Plunge for Special Olympics participant and seeing something like this is great!!
I saw the trailer for this a few days ago and even that was inspiring. I think my favorite part is in the very beginning, when they ask him about his favorite episode of cops. Its almost like you can see him thinking about the question. When his answer comes to mind, he smiles because the thought he conjured up was real. It wasn't for anyone else, it wasn't what he thought somebody else would want to hear, it wasn't to earn himself points with the crew. I wish there were more Curts out there. Special needs or not. Just be real, natural, and good heart-ed people.
I always thought I would be "Curting". But, alas, god isn't in agreement. So, he has flattened the ocean to keep me out. Sorry va surfers.
That was inspiring. Glad his parents didn't put him in a hospital. The spirit is not meant to be put in a cage. You can really seem him enjoying and stoked on those waves. When he won the trophy, I think he is truly having an unbelievable feeling like wining the world tour. Guy was stoked on everything in his life (cops, scanner, trains, surfing, groms, everything). Good story.
Scobey, thanks for posting. That was very inspiring. I have extended family members with aspergers, and this video provides inspiration and hope for great possibilities in spite of what the world views as a disorder/disability. Real good stuff. This will be shared. Thanks again.
