Recently I had a dream that I was surfing. It was one of those dreams that are so vivid it seems like reality. In my dream I ended up underwater and couldn't make it back to the surface. I was fighting to get there but couldn't seem to make it.

I was on the verge of drowning when my wife woke me up. She told me that I had stopped breathing and was struggling to get a breathe and it scared her enough to wake me immediately. She asked me if I was OK. After I caught my breathe I told her that I was fine, that I just had a bad dream about drowning, that I couldn't make it back to the surface for some reason and it was so real that I literally couldn't breathe.

This isn't the first time I've had dreams that were so real that they affected me like this. I was just telling someone about it this morning and so I thought it would be a good topic to discuss.

Have any of you ever had a deadly dream? Is this what happens when someone goes to bed and never wakes up? You know, when there's no rhyme or reason for them not waking up, they just say he / she died of "natural causes"?

It's quite possible that you stopped breathing first, and then you had a dream of not being able to breath. If it happens again I would go see a doctor. It might be sleep apnea.

Yeah, that's possible. And I will if it continues. Thanks for the suggestion. One thing that happens to me a lot is when i'm falling asleep I jerk / convulse a lot until I fall completely into a deep sleep. I have read about that and It seems I get caught between being conscious and unconscious, like a flickering light that wants to go out but won't completely.

Me too... Sometimes I bite my tongue... so hard it bleeds. Once my bicep jerked and I smacked myself in the face. Lol!

Maybe your dream is reflecting about how you feel about life. The wifey constantly nagging, kids pi$$ing on your couch, debt is over whelming? That's how some people would look at it. I think ya just had a bad dream, buck up little camper.

The jerk thing, I have had that happen to me a few times. I used to have nightmares extremely bad as soon as I went to sleep. To the point that I didn't want to go to sleep. Once I got passed that point, I was fine for the rest of the night.

Lol I have caught my wife with an elbow / arm / hand on accident before. She really should wear a helmet when sleeping next to me. CTE is real ya'll.

Not a bad analysis but I don't think that's it. My wife doesn't nag me very often, we don't have kids, we have zero debt, and I'm living out my dream of living on the E. Coast and having the ability to surf daily provided there are waves and i'm physically able. Life is good Z man, life is good! This happened while we are on vacation and sleeping in unfamiliar bed away from home. We were livin it up and stoked! Good vibes duder. Only problem, I knew it was going to be flat come morning...

I know you do not want to hear this, Dsup, but you need to give the weed a break for a while, long enough to see if it makes a difference.

You're right, I don't, but I appreciate any advice you give. Seriously, with your background and all. As for the jerking as I fall asleep, I have done this most of my life actually. The herb is what helps me sleep. But I have actually cut back some, reduced my intake about 25% the past few weeks. Maybe do another 25% and see how that goes. I've also cut back on the drinking, I don't really drink much Monday - Thursday. I may drink 6-12 beers from Friday - Sunday.

Sleep apnea can be some serious schit. Generally caused by an obstruction of the airway, you stop breathing and can possibly die. My wife has it. Do you snore or does your wife complain that you do? (Don't need to confess here.) That's a common symptom. My wife did and it got so bad I had to sleep in another room. Finally spoke to her doctor aboot it and had a sleep study done. She stopped breathing a ridiculous amount of times in a short period. She's using a C-PAP machine now and no more snoring and she gets much better rest as well.

My only dreams aboot surfing are always the same theme. I'm staying at a beach house somewhere with friends and/or family. There's nice waves breaking and I can see them out the window. Other surfers are getting on it. It's a surprise swell too that wasn't forecast. But for some reason I just can't get outside to the beach or can't find my boarte and I never make it to the water.

Wife says I snore bad if I've been drinking but when I haven't been she said I can be so quiet she has checked on me before. She snores really loud usually lol Don't tell her I told you though.

Good start. Believe me, I liked weed; it is why I don't smoke it anymore. If I did, I would be a useless lichen growing on a rock somewhere in the woods of northern NH.
But we need to include that in your equation. A temporary suspension will not hurt you; it is part of the "complete diagnosis".
Anyway, hope it all resolves to your satisfaction. Hang in there.

Yeah, can't hurt. We'll see how it goes. I honestly don't think I'm in any danger with this little breathing episode from a dream where I was drowning. I mean, it's possible like you guys said, and I will take you guys seriously and monitor the situation. To be positive though, I didn't take it as much more than a really vivid or lucid dream. I've read that it's certainly possible that the dream was just so real that my body responded as if it was happening in reality.

Ever had a dream where you are falling and you wake up right before you hit the ground and you have that feeling in your stomach when you are falling? Have you heard that if you hit the ground in your dream that you actually die? Urban myth? lol

I've found when i am not smoking the weeds i dream more....or at least remember them....So quitting the weed may make the dreams more frequent.

I have had dreams where i end up punching the wall. The most vivid "near death" dream involved a great white coming up right at me (was back when i lived in Nor Cal)
