Theres no way a Kookbox is worth the price - Joel Tudor may be one of the best longboarders to have ridden a wave but his boards are overpriced. I'd take a Brian Wynn, Tim Nolte, Legend, or an Austin Board over a Kookbox anyday - even if I had the money to blow !
It's shocking just the used Skip Frye's bring premium dollars; just for giggles trolled the S.D. craigs list. A 30 year old Frye rode hard and in crappy shape for $500 then on the high end $2800 for an almost new Frye Eagle. Some shop near La Jolla specializing in used Frye's prices started at $1600. Skip shaped most of my boards just wished I have kept them especially the Fish.
Mayn dawg. Get money dawg........but anyway Its the surfer that does the surfing. Ive surfed these bro brah 1000 dollar boards and then ive surfed NSP with plastic fins and a screwed on traction pad. Both do fine if you match the board with the conditons. Its more about shape and length than bro bra hipster factor. And its great to get two boards instead of one expensive board that you are scared to break.
I have been toyin with gett a KB I like there moontail board alot. It looks alot to like the Cooperfish Device . I am having wynn shape me a Noserider probally at the end of the month . I am still a loyal to Bing it just I got 2 right now and My cut of my income tax is not a big as I like. Got some house prodjects I am gonna finish and I wanna do a cpl upgrades to my New Surf Wagon so I decide to have Wynn shape me a Noserider . Its gonna be a cross between a Bing Noserider and a little twist on what I want . I will probally order a bing in the Fall I really like there new Levitator I know a guy who has one I wanna try it out to make sure its to my liking
not to mention In The Eye can do anything those ripoff californians can, too, only better, for a lot less money and no california hassle.
I absolutely agree with you chuck. That is a high price for surfboards and not that many people have that kind of money or would ever deem it reasonable. There are definately more fords on the road than ferraris . And thats why all ford drivers look over at the ferrari when sitting at a stop light. Its never the other way around.
Ferraris are maintenance nightmares that are not very reliable and mostly driven by douche bags who absolutely are way over their head when they get behind the wheel (I've had a lot of dealings with them over the years and no I've never owned one). If you definitely want to get where you’re going - drive the Ford. I'd take a Ford GT (no not the Mustang) over a Ferrari any day. Kinda applies to some of the guys with the designer type boards.
bro my dad owns a ferrari and he is not the type to own one. he inherited it from his dad who owned half of fisher price toys. and they would always work on it themselves and it still ran but it needs work done on it now and my dad doesnt have the time to work on it plus we dont have the garage space to put it.
What it boild down to in the end is Style and personal preference. I rather buy a longboard from someone who has been made the template for which all others copied. I just prefer to keep it simple and clean , Boards, shorts , wetsuits and my style. I keep is simple clean
i drive a ford and i make my own boards. Doesnt get any cheaper than that. but i dont think guys that drive ferraris are all deuche bags. if you got the money get the toy. nothing wrong with having what you want and if you feel the board is worth the price by all means. i do agree though that sometimes having a board of that price is for fluff. So in order to make my point lets not use ferraris. you seem to hate them. so instead lets use surfboards, lets say the difference between a **** brewer and a rusty. There is definately no comparison between the two. both are good but one has a reputation that far exceeds the other in every category except price. I personally feel a **** brewer is worth the price. Simple business, if you are crazy busy, your prices arent high enough. people must be paying what these guys are asking or they wouldnt be in business.
Hey, just to set the record straight. No disrespect to any Ferrari owners. I did not say everyone. I deal with the guys who buy one (because they can - nothing wrong with that) and then stuff it into some trees, curb, other cars etc because they have no idea of how to drive a car of that caliber. They still are maintainence nightmares though. Likewise, it cracks me up to see a guy on a high end board riding the white water straight in right up on the beach - why - because he can - and again theres nothing wrong with that. Thank God we live in the USA.
Yeah that understandable. I don't think someone should blow that type of money if there skill level isn't up the par. Don't get me wrong if they wanna spent that type of cash and ride the board til the fin bottoms out it one them but. But if they are just gonna get a board and destroy it of not appreciate the work the shaper put into it then they should stick to off the rack boards
I think I found that Ferrarri or one heck of a baby gift for Zach Bob Simmons sold for $40,0000 http://elitechoice.org/2009/07/22/bob-simmons-sandwich-surfboard-sold-for-40000/
this thread proves the problems with this forum, too much false information that truly does not make sense. These are boards are very expensive because they are the best boards out there. the ability to blend the new with the old in an artful fashion that works. Chris Christenson, for instance, makes some of the best boards out there, and they all work incredibly well. Channel Islands are expensive due to the process it takes to make one. If you guys knew anything about their factory you would understand. It takes months for them to make a board, as opposed to a day. Merrick lets his boards cure at all phases of the process, which makes those boards stronger, lighter and more resistant to damage, hence why you see so many of them browned out and surfed hard. He does no "outsource" his glassing. Ps, the sander makes those boards, you can pick one up off the racks and know it is going to work. too much to type and it is just not worth it, my two cents, go to a place where the people know whats up, and ask questions. Ps. i know where there is a simmons that is worth way more than 40,000.
ABSOLUTELY agree with this post and Matt. Anyone who has made a surfboard should be able to understand the amount of craftsmanship and time it takes. Hand shaped surfboards are WAY underpriced for the amount of work that goes into them. The ONLY reason you are able to find cheap hand made surfboards is because the people who make them LOVE their craft and are willing to live a modest lifestyle to continue doing what they love. If it were not for their love of surfing we would all be surfing asian made garbage and surfboards would be a sporting good like baseball bats and badminton rackets. These are pool toys we ride. China could steal production in a second if we let them. But it's better to have some respect for yourself and surfing and ride something that is made with love. The process to become an approved CI glasser is ridiculous. They have crazy high standards that a lot of glassing companies can't meet. They have finish shapers cleaning up the boards after CNC who could all easily pick up a planer and shape that same board as good as the CNC. I'm not a fan of the new rider driven design without Merrick around anymore (ala Burton management), but they still do quality work. As do the other hand shapers named in this thread. If you treat surfboards like they are a $79.95 pool toy from K-mart, and b!tch about prices, you'll end up getting what you ask for and surfing will lose it's soul. But hey, you'll save a few bucks and look really cool to your friends with that Martha Stewart airbrush on your new blue light special.
You're right... the $$$ they deserve to make, compared to what they're making. And shaping is the "good" work... it's the romantic part... the sexy part... of board building. The glassers, the sanders... they deserve just as much credit, and are also highly skilled craftsmen, specialized in what they do. And they all deserve to be paid. Love don't feed the kids. Production shapers BARELY make a living. But they do live the lifestyle they want to live, and that's part of why they do it. The same should be said for everyone who has a career. You either love what you do or you spend the rest of your life miserable. Shapers are no exception... they love what they do, but that does not mean they shouldn't be paid for their rare and particular set of skills. Somebody said they paid $250 for a custom clear sanded board, and it included a set of futures fins. What I fear in that situation is that somebody's a fool... either the builder, or the buyer. I hope that's not the case. What's more likely is that it was designed in CAD, shaped by machine, and is constructed with poor quality materials. But again... I hope I'm wrong. Maybe it's a bro deal...
i didnt mean to sound like i was implying that bro sorry. i definately wasnt. and yes it is hilarious to see a dude riding an expensive high end surfboard right up the beach and we see it all the time.
It dont matter if I buy a Bing, Legend , Wynn, or Cooperfish , I know what I am getting for my money and a know I will be happy cause the shaper know my style of surfing and under stands what I wanna get the board to do or what kinda of performance I want from it. Plus with these shapers you are not just a number on list of board orders. Every boards is made to strict requirment for Quality. Not to meantion that they are taking board design and construction to new levels and out of the normal views of surfing. I guess I am set in my ways . They style of boards I ride and my style of surfing is just what I grew up around. I guess I just know what I like and who to go to when I want a certain type of board.
