It truly is a dream come true. I put in almost 12 years with the same company before I was able to pull it off. I was told no a couple of times in the past, then after being in management for a couple years I took another swing at it and they agreed! But had to step back down from management, which is fine, I make more money and have less head aches.

Just don't hurt your back lifting that sh*t.

I received a Surfline membership as a gift and watched some SD cams today. You are a very fortunate man.

Cant imagine a 9-5 desk job. I work at my desk, aka kitchen table 2 hours a night. In season between 10 and 2 Im outside working and after that I can do whatever I want. I dont make a lot of money, but have very little debt and take care of myself and family just fine. This quote has meant a lot to me "the real cost of anything is the amount of life you spend to acquire it" . I refuse to spend my life acquiring things that dont matter.

I have a desk job but I control my schedule. When surf is on the horizon I plan accordingly and keep the calandar clear for when I think it will be best. Live close to surf and office is 15 minutes from the surf. I can ditch out whenever the need arrises. Helps that a lot of the time I'm surfing with the owner of the company.

I try not to get my hands dirty but its unavoidable. Im an assistant to the owner of several construction and landscape supply yards. When the shi hits the fan or we have a mechanical breakdown we fix our own machinery, trucks, and equipment. Most days we just write invoices but with 6 trucks a crane, 4 payloaders, concrete batch plant, cement bagging machine, shredders, tumblers, and conveyors, forklifts n Rental equipment. At least once a day I am shoulder deep in grim. Once a month we ride around and shake down past due bills. I love that! We do undercover work to find where the contractors are working or hiding and shake em down right in front of their customers and employees, wives, girlfriends, whatever it takes.

The only problem with self-employment is that you quickly become un-employable. If my business were to go belly-up, I'd live in a box down by the river before I ever worked for someone else again.

I think I lost multiple friends this summer sending pictures of me 'working' from my boat. It's alright, they were the type that wouldn't pay for gas or beer anyways.

Working remote is the way to go, the cube farm will kill you.

I have a desk job, but my desk sits in front of windows 100ftX12ft so I have a pretty good view. When I'm not at my desk I am either selling vehicle parts or helping to fix a stinky rotten limousine. My family owns the business so I will come in late at my leisure, but will then work through lunch, or work through lunch and leave early to surf.
I leave for PR next friday and forgot to tell my HR lady. I dont have enough vacation days left and I said "what are ya gonna do, fire me?"
No one will ever work as hard as I do at this job for as little money as I am making. They are lucky to have an employee who works as hard and cares as much as I do. But when there is surf, they can get fukt.
