Did you lose power and/or have water in the basement?

We didn't lose power at all, which was awesome because the sump pump would've died. On some of the other walls, we did have water coming in. All together we had about and inch of water in about 2/3's of the basement. It could have been worse though. I feel bad for Sea Bright!

I'm very grateful we didn't lose power, but I hate drying out the basement.

I didn't check Sea Bright this weekend. How bad was the flooding and beach erosion? Andy K's and the center of town must have been under water.

We had a damp floor in the utility room of our basement. I think it may have been coming up from the floor cause the walls weren't damp at all. It may have had something to do with the fact that the snow took out one of our gutters and we havent had it replaced yet.

What do you do to dry it out? I'm running a dehumidifier in there right now. You know of anything else to do to make sure no mold starts growing?

I wet-vac all the water up that I can see. On the one side of the basement I run the dehumidifier and on the other side, the furnace throws enough dry heat to kill moisture. It sucks, but having the shop-vac is helpful.

    Drying out basements

The most important thing to do in drying out a basement is to get a lot of air moving around. Get as many fans in the basement as possible with the dehumidifier. Keep them as close to the floor as possible. If you have carpet get it out of there if possible. They rent fans to dry out carpets. Of course do all this after you sucked out all the standing water. Bleach in a spray bottle applied to the wet areas will also stop mold / mildew but its not good to breath in. If dry wall is saturated cut it out up to where it is dry - you can always patch sections in.

Yeah true and we're catching a break this week with the warm weather. I plan on opening the basement windows while we're home. Please God give the water table time to drop before we get any more precipitation!

    No Bleach

Bleach does not kill mold. Only bleaches it white so then you cant see it. Mold generally goes into a dormant state and then when cool moist conditions come back so does the mold and bleach does not kill it and the bleach odors can also return when it gests wet again. Dry it out as best as possible as soon as possible.

I never said bleach kills mold. I said it can help stop mold from starting. I helped a friend do water extraction and restoration for 2 years. If you already have mold you need professional help. There are many so called home remedies to kill mold and I have never seen one work 100%. The best way to get rid of it is to remove what its growing on if you can. There are several types of mold and they all can cause serious health issues especially in kids. Its nothing to play around with.

When they're dry they're great. Unfortunately 2/3's of the basements in this country experience some moisture issues. I'm assuming the other 1/3 that don't are newer construction.
