You are 100% wrong. Many turns are shown in the videos. Why do you post such misinformation? Of course one has spray, but the idea that throwing more spray is a performance goal is a celebration of inefficiency which has become a tradition due to contest trick surfing and magazine still photography. Skating on ice produces less drag than surfing on water, the fact that less material is thrown during an efficient turn on ice than on water is evidence of this greater efficency. Yes, but they move less material and this is one reason why they experience less drag. My boards are generally faster, handle better, and have superior wave making ability over a wide range of conditions. That means that they have superior performance in every respect except trick surfing. You are stuck in the limited modernist paradigm so it is unsurprising that you cannot understand this, but it is somewhat surprising that you post misinformation by saying that my boards do not turn when the evidence that they do is before your eyes. .
Roy if you were to ask me how I "feel" when I see your surfing videos..... I "feel" bored. and after reading above reply to Clemson I actually think I've figured it out.... you don't know what it "feels" like to carve into a huge backside turn and put up an wall of water. It looks cool... but more importantly it "feels" great. If you don't know what that is like than thats your hangup. That feeling and liking that feeling is what brings us back to surf evertime there are waves. But your surfing style... just standing on the board.... that's not what surfing is about. that's not what the pioneers of the sport were all about. Its about personal expression. This thread, this mind numbing back and forth with you, really helps me put into words what I dislike about your boards... you have designed a board that forces everyone to ride it the same way. sure maybe it cuts down on "unnecessary" moves to make it all the way on the wave... but let me tell you, there is no better feeling, for me, then heading into an open faced shoulder with a full head of steam and leaning into a full head high bucket throwing cutback. It feels great. And I don't think you've ever experienced it for yourself.... maybe you have, Im sure you'll tell me how somehow my "feelings" and what I enjoy about surfing are wrong. But again... its your hangup. You're missing out on the best things we can experience on a wave... just my honest opinion.
Comments on the Makaha at Manu Bay session posted here: "Hey Roy good to see you in action again. I really do like the way the board you show here can be trimmed and turned by just a few re-positions. I have (as you know) always admired your work and still say one day's (if I can) I'll buy one off you." "Hi Roy, thanks for the video. The Makaha performs really smoothly." "he has such wonderful talents thanks for sharing the news, Roy" "Hey Roy . . . In all honesty the display on the board you ride in the above vid is closest to date of my vision of a 'super board' " "Relentless was definitely the right word for that session Roy, New Zealand, The Land of the Long Wood Board, have a great year Roy." "36 sec. cutting back to the source" "nice control, subtle little changes and the speed!" "Yeah that's a good vid - great early morning light too" "That's some nice surfing Roy... Nice song choice... You are through to the next round" "Great vid Roy ! Board looks fast." "1:25min super trim" "great vid and waves Roy, I liked the envious looks from the shoulder hoppers as they tried to drop in on potato chip boards..." "great vid, let me know when u plan a trip up" From Seeka who rides a Makaha: "i enjoyed the vid too. this board is similar to mine, altho mine is a 10ft single fin pin with a low tail rocker..very fast and easy to ride. actually, at times it's too fast for our gutless mush, so cutbacks become compulsory. great for lazy as$ surfing. had a few guys checking out my sticks last time i went to the beach. i got the feeling that one of them thought they were just novelty value(hey dude, if you're reading this, then a smile now and then won't mess with your extreme coolness much)..that is till they got out there on their slow as longboard trifins & missed any waves that came along. meanwhile i smiled like a cheshire cat as i caught anything i wanted and surfed past at relaxed speed" "One of roys boards would be a pleasure to ride and own, the craftsmanship is exquisite and they go fast" "Good video Roy, I can appreciate the strengths of the ride. " "Wow, that thing really motors on take off eh!" "Cruisy session there Roy, I would've been grinning like a cheshire cat after that I reckon!" "When you get in trim the accelaration is awesome!! It almost looks like you have to constantly slow of down! Lots of closed minds on the erbb but I don't give a poop!" "The guy in the orange wetsuit looks like he's enjoying what he's doing. " "The board certainly looks to be working well on that pointbreak!" " lots of acceleration in trim" "It looks like you are catching a lot of waves and are having a great time. And from reading some of your posts you have a way of getting people worked up. Nice on both accounts. " "Are you having fun? Then fark what everyone thinks" "Sweet!" "Roy I appreciate what trip your on. You're doing what you want and having fun with it! Cool!"
I rode shortboards for 23 years and spent many of those years living at one of NZ's best pointbreaks, I know what it feels like and much prefer to do what I'm doing now... more importantly although I've experienced both sides of the coin you have not... If that is all you are seeing you are as blind as a bat... and I remind you that you don't know what it feels like... there's nothing like being in control of a 13 foot Makaha..... sure I make it look easy, and it can be easy, but the rush of riding such a long fast board, carving with such a long rail, experiencing the phenomenal acceleration and controlling the beast is incredible.. I wouldn't swap it for all the shortboard moves ever done. Even the sound is out of this world. Ironically many of the pioneers rode using a similar stance to mine, and used pintails of similar length.... both Tom Blake and Duke knew that heavier boards were faster and Duke preferred Olo boards to shorter types... said he rated his ride on the 16 foot olo in Castle surf higher than his Olympic swimming gold. You don't know what you are missing out on. How ironic that you say that and yet try to prescribe the nature of that expression... thereby making it generic and less personal. Prescribing rules for self expression is a self contradictory modernist paradigm. Yeah I have, and I don't miss it. You on the other hand have never experienced what I'm doing. Yep, I have. I haven't and I'm not going to. Do what you like, feel what you like. Shortboard moves? ... Been there, done that.... what i'm doing now is so much more rewarding, but there's no compulsion for you to partake.
Just in case you missed this one: "they got out there on their slow as longboard trifins & missed any waves that came along. meanwhile i smiled like a cheshire cat as i caught anything i wanted and surfed past at relaxed speed" R.B. Invercargill
Nothing in your videos suggests that even you make riding those things "look easy". Instead it "looks hard to turn" But really, I can't disagree with your points about personal expression and what surfing is about. If that's what surfing is for you, more power to you. I do think you kind of skimmed across Clemson's last question though. I'm not curious as to what bizarre shape you are planning on working with next, I am curious to know in what ways your boards are going to be able to advance the sport of surfing. New designs by "mainstream" companies aim to do, and have done, just that, allowing surfers who enjoy surfing in a more similar style to the rest of us to progress tremendously.. What future do Roy Stuart boards hold that the rest don't? Because I have not seen a single "maneuver" in your videos that cannot be replicated on a 10' Bic board that sells for quite literally 1/500th or less of the price. You constantly say how none of the commenters have "experienced both sides of the coin" the way you have....maybe make a board that will retail for less than a quarter million dollars and more people will have the opportunity to do so. I'm a little curious to hear your justification for the prices of your boards.... (cue the "Stay on topic, please" response from Roy).
I can't blieve this thread is still going. Awesome! Can't we just agree to disagree? NOBODY will change Roy's mind. And Roy will NEVER change anyone's mind here. Roy, you say your boards are faster and handle better than other boards. If that is truly the case you should get some new videos of someone else surfing them. Maybe it's just the surfer that looks slow and not really in control. Anyone can say their product is the best. It's a matter of opinion.... I surf better than everyone. I'm the best looking dude in the world. I'm the coolest guy ever. Because I said so. That makes it fact
Roy, this reply, for once, is not ment to cut you down or anything of that nature.. but dont you think you're age is dictating how you surf now? You are a bit older and probably not able to do what you once were.... so I could see that being an issue and why you are surfing the way you do. As for the pioneers... they didn't have short board thrusters... so you can't speak to what they preferred.
I'm going back to my original opinion that these boards seem perfectly designed to ride a river bore upstream to work while reading the paper and drinking a cup of coffee. Just a tool used to accomplish a task. The jury is out on efficiency but they aren't "fun" to ride as 99.99% of the surfing world would describe it. Ok. Time to leave work for the week. Admin you can close the thread now. I need to get some work done next week and this train wreck is too funny to ignore.
Well Mr Fitz, I'm fitter, stronger and healthier than I've ever been, thanks to knowledge which comes from experience.
They already have, keeping in mind that I don't subscribe to the idea that 'the sport of surfing' is one amorphous pile of cartel led consensus. You suggest that advancement consists of conformity? Lol ok Yes you have, in fact most of what you have seen can't be replicated on a BIC or any of the common longboard types. Build one if you want to ride one cheaply. There isn't one, except that it suits us to price them thus. .
The last session with an appropriate soundtrack... I once owned a waterfront pole house on the point here, which I built myself back in '88.. good times. Thanks to Heavy Hitters for the track http://www.roystuart.biz/2013/02/heavy-hitter-rattlesnake-man.html
my thoughts from yesterday are confirmed.... I caught myself in one of the biggest yawns while watching this. Roy... you've mastered the art of boring... I guess its a byproduct of efficency? there's a both a compliment and truth in my statements.
in all honesty i don't think my front door would ride any worse than this. it floats, it's wood and it's heavy. put those together on the face of a perfect peeling point break and it goes. all for under $500k.. there are shapers doing very interesting things with wood. roy isn't one of them.
Whatever...here's a brief overview of the break during the session, that's my dog on the rocks. This will be part of a ten minute documentary which will be out in a month or so, including me yapping on camera. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151276696139109
