Why put my name in ' ' I suppose your questioning who I really am. Why assume I'm not myself based on the fact that I clearly admire Roy's work. Do yourself a favor and learn a little about wooden boards, it's a very rewarding thing especially when they come from your own hands.

I'm willing to bet that Roy has never sold one of these "surfboards".

 

20 dollars worth of materials, 1,399,980 worth of chraftsmanship and labor. Estimated time of construction - 20 hours. Roy is working at a rate of 69,999 dollars per hour. And that must mean Roy thinks very highly of himself.

Roy, maybe when you are long gone the Met will have a feature on you - a frontiersman/innovator of creating useable art from the surfboard medium. But until then, nobody will care. And I suspect even the Met will get a substantial discount off your rate card.

 

Well despite what Roy Charges for his boards any one can buy his build plans which is pretty sweet if ya ask me. For a very fair price too. So basically if you can't manage to build a wooden board and you don't have allot of spare cash Roy's designs are not for you most likely. I'm glad that he asks so much for them because now the rarity of his designs have gone way up and there's less guys building them compared to grain surfboard fish frame kits which are undoubtably a more 'mindless' approach to whipping a wooden board together. Not that I think grain kits are bad I've seen some pretty sweet boards from them, but properly building a Roy board is not easy and takes practice. Trust me I've tried a few using his method and the first one is so ugly I can't stand to look at it but hey it works ok for a first timer approach and it was a learning experience. Plus those tear drop olo plan shapes by Roy are amazing and very unique.

 

Chuck I respect what your doing and your board looks great so don't take this the wrong way. Isn't this really his whole business model? Meaning, he prices the boards HE builds so astronomically high to create a perceived value for his design knowing darn well nobody would actually pay that much coin for one, and therefore he can sell his kit plans at a "reasonable" cost and make you the consumer think you are getting a HUGE deal, compared to what he would charge to build it himself? Seems like that would be the only way he would make money.

 

I've read online that Roy's boards have sold for more realistic prices. Ranging from 2- 20 thousand. Don't quote me on that tho, like I said it was on a web page somewhere. I could care less how much he asks the fact that the build plans are available is great. You can clearly see how his boards ride all you gotta do is go to YouTube.

Also I am yet to build a Roy board I've only mimicked the parallel profile construction method which is very rewarding. When you shape those rails and start to see the intricate blocking patterns and then add some epoxy.. Everything just pops and it's really quite exciting.

I don't doubt that Roy is an excellent self promoter so perhaps his list price is a marketing ploy but still the olo tear drop plan shape boards are sweet. Don't knock it till ya try it. Hey that guys Steve 83 made on similar and he raves about it. It all depends what you want out of a surfboard.

 

Fair enough, but Steve83 hasn't even caught a wave on his yet, and it's been how long? He'd rather he lend his board to people who CAN surf so he can get ride reports, so I wouldn't use him as a reference for anything unfortunately, not to mention the Cat Woman gloves, yeah those'll do the trick HAHAHA

 

Hahahah cat woman gloves ?? Well I think I'm a strong enough surfer to be able to easily catch allot of waves on my Roy board. Roy hand drew me a beautiful template to build the 10-9 makaha. I told my self to get it done by the end of November so I can really get it into some over head winter swells. So I'll be a reference for you on how that rides, which will be amazing I'm sure.

I'd love to see your board in some HH waves though, all kidding aside, it would be a lot of fun to give her a go if I were up your way. Definitely share some camera footage of this when you get around to it.

 

I've been meaning to share footage of my gang buster stub board that I built using Roy's parallel profile method but I haven't had any good surf it's really too bad. I can guarantee you I will have the makaha (Roy's design) in over head stuff this winter / fall. I've been known to take 11 ft sups out on 6-8 ft swell and do just fine so I'd like to imagine that I'll be able to do the same if not better on Roy's Olo. I'm very excited to get this project started. If you came to Maine and hit up my spot I'd let u try it, you seem like a decent fellow ... Not Yankee tho he's a pos

 

Right on Chuck, i'd love to make a trip to Maine one of these days, just won't be any time soon unfortunately. I have no doubt you'll get that thing into some proper surf. 6-8ft on the SUP huh? Sounds like me last cane season lol, I had injured my wrist and wasn't able to do a pop-up for a few weeks to a month so having the SUP kept me out there and I didn't miss a beat. I think i'll be exclusively on my Coil for this season however, I'm on a mission with this board.
