Do people take mavericks too seriously?

Frak can't remember who it was I saw interviewed talking about getting pushed down at Mavs and ended up hitting bottom. Said that was the oh sh*T moment as he knew he was a solid 50+ft down at that point. Said the first wave takes you down 25ft then the next one takes you all the way down. Would love to just sit and watch some day. (After I get back from Teahupoo of course).

baddy, I was out one day it started at 8' with 10' sets, then it just got crazy with sets swinging out to the channel almost breaking to Kammies. I found a shoulder in between sets and came in, skeered for sure

been out at sunset at some size a few times, ALWAYS have to prepare.....I dont think Id ever paddle out at Mavs

You'll want to bring a set of binoculars to really be able to see what's going on out there, it's pretty far from shore, videos make it look like it's right there, but in person it's really not that close. Pictures and video I took don't do it justice.

I know they shut down Ghosttrees because of the BS PWC laws in the area. Completely shut down, aside from a few people that charge it before a trip to jail or a fine. But that place always looked even gnarlier than Mavericks to me. Probably the worst cleanup I have ever seen happened there in a video that came out like 8 years ago. The one where it takes the ski out too trying to save the surfer that got mowed down. I mean, it is just as legit as mavs and has some even sketchier properties.

Amazes me more people don't die every year. Lots more. Mavs, Jaws, Shippies, Dungeons, The Right, etc. etc...

How does someone get sucked over the falls on a 15 footer where the reef is only a couple feet down and not come out looking like pulled pork? Amazing.

Good thread, hopefully the only guns we'll see are the ones you don't mind getting wet.

yea man I got that movie lol,it was the smith brothers(not the 2 kids from Hawaii) 1 wiped out and the other went to save him when they both got washed out.i don't think they ever paddled ghosttrees,I think it was a tow only spot, and the big boulders infront of the break make it even deadlier than mavs

I think Ghost Trees' location right on the famous Pebble Beach golf course was the real reason the place was shut down.

i don't even know how to measure these things...to me there's flat (not rideable at all), then small but okay if the weather & water is okay and haven't been in a while, then there's okay nice rides but not a lot of size but i can make it work, then on to these are pretty nice and mellow with a little size and mellow lines (getting in to the 2-4 ft range here i think, or waist to belly), then there's alright 'bout time we get some swell (3-5ers i think and chest to shoulder), then ohhh, alright, adrenaline's starting to go and the paddle out takes some work (like 4-6 or head high), then there's alright adrenaline is going and i'm getting more selective (like 6-8 maybe, a little overhead), then there's oh snap, this is bigger than i thought paddles out was a beyatch even through the "channel" and i'm gonna pick one and make sure it's worth it 'cause i'm not doin' that again (happened a few weeks ago up here... i dunno even know the size, just came outta nowhere (when it was supposed to be 3-5 ft, and hours before i went out buoy was only in that range) and actually took three...the last two of which i actually rode...the first was just kind of a test to see what would happen and i bailed earlier than i really needed to i think)

so that's my scale for me...these fellas live on a totally different plane...anything over my scale is batshyte and mavs (unlike some the other waves that curl a little more) looks to me like a barrel in an avalanche...fug that

well put pier.....someone important said....big surf isnt measured in feet, but in increments of fear

I know my limits, and when I am pushing my limits, I am fearful, but not foolish, I still go, but not with a cocksure attitude, confident humility and through understanding of the repercussions......be prepared to hold breath and take a whooping..

Man, that Kai hatchet video was great. I must say I was a little disappointed when he paddled out as Ft. Point.
