what sort of water/solution are you supposed to use in the neti pot? i heard there's a deadly brain infection you can get if you don't boil/sterilize the water?

Here's what I do: First, bend over at the waist so the top of your head is facing the ground, shaking your head back and forth (using neck rotation) while blowing out of your nose. You should feel the water sloshing around in there, making its way to the front of your sinuses. With your head still in the same position, pinch the top portion of the cartilage in your nose, just below your nasal bone. Now, pretty much just blow as much water as you can out of your nose, head still in the same position, still shaking and rotating if you like. Applying different levels of pressure and wiggling your pinched fingers around also help. For this to work, you do need to be able to breathe out of your nose a little bit. Works best just after a session, but I've also done it some time after surfing on occasion when I forget to clear 'em out on the beach. I used to get sinus infections all of the time, but now rarely get them after starting to do this. And also, I've found out that some people are grossed out by this whole thing, so make sure to do it around as many people as possible.

I always do, water is never too clean in Texas, I just use swimmers ear afterwards. I think I only had one ear infection last year. None this year. If we didnt surf during or after a rain we wouldn't surf much.

yeah you can get sick surfing after a rain for sure. I got something back in the fall of '09 that had me on death's door for about a week. Couldn't keep anything down, glands swell all up, pupils dilated.... scary. Went to the doc and did the Z-pack (zithromax?) antibiotic and it cleared it all up.

Another way to look at it, I got drunk as a skunk on saturday night and was sick as hell all day sunday. Was it worth it? eh, sure. Surfing after the rain is not much different. you take chances. Is it worth it to you? After losing a week of my life and 12 pounds I say no, it's got to be firing.

I didn't know it was an issue in the midatlantic region.

In SoCal I wouldn't because their poor drainage systems would overflow and you would get runoff. Thus potentially getting some sort of bacteria.

While visiting Oahu, on the west and north sides, there was occasionally really brown water which no one would get into, but I am not sure if that was from storm/ runoffs. Does anyone know?

I've had some of my best sessions after a rain especially if the storm is headed out to sea. Also during a rain is awesome

    After a rain

NJ is usually ok after a rain... A big NE blow sends all the medical waste from NYC so that's normally when I'm a little cautious but at the same time, we all know the value of a good NE so you weigh the risks and dodge the illegally dumped needles from our friends at NY Presbyterian Hospital. I would never surf the day after a rain anywhere in Cali from Ventura south. Non-treated raw runoff from the streets dumps into the pacific at god knows how many river mouths... Malibu, Seal Beach, Tamarack, HB... all absolutely disgusting after rain out there. I scraped my foot on a rock... something you wouldn't even band-aid... near Topanga, and it took 3 rounds of antibiotics to knock out whatever the hell was in my system. That was the only lesson I needed... minimum 24 hours after a rainfall... preferably 36. Stay healthy.
