BTW, I have many Black friends and Colleagues and get along fine with them. We discuss things like black crime in America and how crazy situations like Chicago are really unfortunate. No Racism here just trying to understand why it is so disproportionate. I believe that family structure is a huge problem in that part of society. Do you disagree? Don't try to Pidgeon hole me as racist...that is one thing I am not.

 

So, let me clarify my post, so that I don't offend anyone. I am not saying that the race itself is predisposed, I am saying that the stats for that race bares out the fact that they be predisposed to commit more crime.

The question is Why?

Is it Poverty? I just don't believe that is the underlying reason (probably does not help). Is it family structure? I believe this to be a major reason? This was my point. The fact is it's disproportionate to the black race.

So, why the lack of family structure in that part of society? Is it part of their culture? I don't know the answer.

Anyone care to enlighten me on Why?

 

There are many reasons, a lotta ins, a lotta outs. Hard to nail it all down in one post so no point in trying. People are a product of their environment, except, there are always exceptions to that rule. Some people despite their circumstances find a way to do the right things and avoid being a statistic, but sadly, most do not find their way despite the cards they have been dealt. But again, the reasons WHY are too complex to lay it out in one post. Or even several.

 

Dude, don't let facts get in the way of an opportunity to derail a conversation by calling someone racist.

The answer is, yes, the issues in the black community are largely caused by poverty, which brings with it all the family structural issues you mentioned, and everything else with it. Do these same problems exist with wealthy and upper middle class black families, no, they do not, no more than they do with wealthy white families. Plus if you take a minority group and oppress it for a couple hundred years, they don't just suddenly bounce back after the oppression is lifted. As SUP mentioned, you could write a thesis on the root causes of poverty among the black community, and some of them go waaaay back, and culture, not race, also plays a part.

Now, the oppression point may be the root of some of this too...can't argue with that relative to poverty. I still think there is something culturally that we are missing relative to the family structure, which leads to the disproportionate violence. Again, there are poverty stricken cultures that still hold family structure together.

I was thinking too, about other black cultures around the world (I know we are discussing our domestic issues) and how they manage themselves as a society. I wonder how the family structure is in places around Africa? I don't know. Just feel like there is some cultural flaw...maybe its the oppression and anger and frustration but why kill your own race at an alarming rate? This would be an interesting thesis.

Well just ask your black friends why they are culturally flawed, and I'm sure they will give you a calm well reasoned answer.

Not sure they are culturally flawed necessarily. Not sure anyone knows truly Why it occurs. You don't and I don't Sig. I still do wonder why and it appears that there is A flaw in the way it goes down. Whether drugs, poverty or otherwise the black community kill each other and commit the most crime.

In other words, I would not approach my colleague who happens to be black and say, why are blacks culturally flawed? however I have talked over beers with him about black culture including the violence. He does not have the answer to the Why. I still wonder...that's all.
