I'm all for shopping local (and I do as much as I can), but just for the sake of discussion, Walmart employs 1.4 million people in America (2.1 million in total), making up 1% of the entire Country's work force. That's a lot of people who have jobs because of Walmart. You're not just making the Walton family rich, you're also helping to employee millions of people too. Those people take their paychecks, and then stimulate the economy. So there are positives and negatives to shopping at a place like Walmart. Personally, it's your money, you should do with it what you want to. Just providing some perspective is all.

Good points DP. I'm with bennysgohome though as I believe in keeping money in the community and good people. Kinda like world peace. Doesn't seem possible for everyone to do it, but it's a nice idea and good way of living

Yeah. I mean I support local businesses whenever it makes sense, but not blindly. Local board shapers - sure, hardware store that charges a bit more but offers tech. assist that I need - yes, butcher that charges more for meat or seafood that is actually better - absolutely.

But if its just some gadget that I need to grab and go with no help needed, I'm fine with saving the 30% at Walmart and probably end up spending that money I just saved locally anyway.

They employee 1.4 million, but those people would work for local businesses if they Walmart didn't put them under.

if walmart didn't, somebody else would have. It started with Sears. They offered one stop shopping for pretty much anything and via catalogs. SO people didnt have to run to 6 different stores, just one. Better mouse trap always wins.

Perhaps. Then again, maybe those business owners don't have the desire or vision to expand and grow and keep up with the demand, thus needing to hire those employees. Different business models.

Exactly. Studies have confirmed there would be more local jobs than the 1.4 million if walmart didn't exist. This also includes logistics, transportation, etc of getting the goods to different local businesses. It really is a domino effect. Walmart have shrinked the size of jobs that would exist. It is not the opposite. I know the number sounds big but just do a little research.

Many don't believe in slave labor to give you some junk that isn't even a necessity.

This is the world we live in and it would be great if most people did this. It also would be great if Walmart didn't exist and other huge stores, we wouldn't even know about many of these gadgets. People need the latest Iphone to take the latest selfie to feed their narcissism. Any phone will do. People actually think there is really a difference or that slight difference matters. I see people who have very little who feel entitled to get these gadgets at slave labor prices. Maybe that is what is wrong.

Yes, these people take their money and go to walmart or target lmao. There are no longer local business owners just local workers that work for fascist corporations.

Like I said, shop local when you can and it makes sense. I do all the time. Many times the case however, they don't have what I'm looking for and I'm forced to look elsewhere, the internet being the big one. The world has changed, it's just the way it is.

They may not have it at that particular store, but someone does (or did)... You used to call around to find out if someone had something you were looking for... And then (I know this sounds crazy to some of the young folks) drive a little bit further to get it.

Jeez, maybe I shouldn't have said gadgets and confused you. Ok - I'm talking about things like motor oil, filters, paint, charcoal. I don't need help or customer service with these things, and they all existed long before Walmart did.

I wonder if people said the same things about Sears 100 years ago? Nobody shops at my local Sears anymore, except the people that are 100 years old lol.

Seems to me that our current situation iis brought about by being the most capitalistic society on Earth. More consumerism brings large, radical and continuous changes to consistently compete for currency.

I really don't believe the system is perfect, nor can it be stopped.

The human race wants what's new. We want it cheap, fast and effective. As soon as the Native Americans saw steel axes and guns, they wanted them.

"Jamestown and Plymouth, colonists held an advantage in firearms only for a handful of years before Native people began building their own arsenals. The founders of later colonies, such as Pennsylvania or Georgia, arrived to find indigenous people already furnished with the best gun technology Europe could produce and keen to acquire more."
