Its only the second week of May and i'm already done with the benny's. So i was surfing with a few friends of mine yesterday in some small but fun waves when i was riding a wave and some old guy with an ancient longboard decides to stand right in my line of fire and not even attempt to move. i didnt see him because my back was turned but my friend told me this guy just stood there watching me come right at him until we hit eachother. I got a pretty decent sized ding in my pretty new board (christmas present) and confronted the guy about it. Im 18 years old so naturally filled with adrenaline, but did my best to be respectful to the guy but he was just an absolute kook. He started telling me the i shouldnt have been surfing there and that NJ doesnt have any waves anyway so i shouldnt have even cared about my board. He then started getting in my face while telling me to back off or he was going to call the cops. Basically nothing productive occured from it except me left with with a big ding in my baby from some kook who couldnt even ride 2 foot white water. I guess i just needed to rant about this somewhere where people could feel my pain haha...

your back was turned? this must have taken place in all of 2 seconds... not saying you're at fault btw, Im just saying it sounds like this could have just been a perfect accident.... no one to really blame.
as for the dudes attitude... no comment. sucks about the board. get it fixed asap and move on.

Happens all the time..we were all dumb kooks at some point, so have some respect. I've had similar things happen to me even on brand new boards and I just let it go because surfing is about respect and being happy. The last thing I want to be viewed as is a disrespectful teenage hothead in the lineup. Nobody likes those kinds of kids. Just because he didn't get out of the way doesn't make him a kook either, as we all know it isn't easy to dodge a guy coming down the line. I've f***ed up tons of dudes rides just by being in the wrong place at the wrong time..I happens to the best of us from time to time.

His board was so big and ancient it was completely fine.

And Brett, it was breaking onto a sandbar so the dude was in not even wait deep water, but i do understand what your saying

I don't understand, if he was just standing there, and you were riding a 2 foot wave why not go around him? Granted that may have kept you from getting the best ride possible on the wave but that would have been better than dinging your board.

longer can't determine which way a shorty is going to launch but, he should be paddling in some direction to get out of the way instead of just catching rays.

yes, it does; the fact that he just stood there is proof of that. someone w/ any kind of skill would've done SOMETHING, even the wrong thing, to at least try to get out of the way.

remember, folks: the rider on the wave has right of way. it is not his/her responsibility to avoid you, it is YOUR responsibility to avoid the rider! if that means paddling into the whitewater & taking the wave on the head, so be it!

Yeah good job keeping your cool. A kid was paddling out and thought I was going to hit him (I was turning out of the way of him though) and he threw his board in front of him trying to protect himself and gashed my brand new lost board. I was pissed and told him I wasn't going to hit him and he ditched his board launching it right into the bottom of mine when I was on rail. I regret yelling at him emotions got the better of me... I was close to him but def a few feet away he would have been clear.

What would you like us to do about it? People these days have to many outlets to complain.... and about the incident, looks like you need to learn how to turn buddy, fat guys with longboards should be pretty easy to go around if you know what you are doing.... the more you say kook the more you look like one

Do you realize how hypocritical you sound. You just complained about complainers. I wasn't asking for your sympathy i was just venting my story with people who have similar experiences.

It is all part of the game. I once broke a guy's nose with my board when I was trying to get out of his way. I was 18 at the time and he was probably in his 30s. This was in Lido Beach, Long Island. He paddled over to me covered in blood. I thought he was going to kill me, but he asked if I ditched my board and I told him I held onto it the whole time and was trying to get out of his way. He told me not to worry about it then. I asked him if I could drive him to the hospital and he said would be okay on his own. Never gonna forget that day.

Age has nothing to do with it......its respect...and it should go down like ZBass' story.......if you screw up, man up....admit your wrongdoing....learn.....apologize......compensate.....shake hands.....move on or surf........or buy a round for the victim after the session...(sounds a little utopian theses days)
