It ‘promises to revolutionise online sports teaching’ and it is a great concept 1. users video their surfing technique problem and upload it 2. they browse yoorGooRoo.com's selection of GooRoos and choose one on the basis of experience, language, user rating and price 3. the GooRoo analyses the problem and uploads a personalised video solution 4. the user downloads the solution to their technique problem 5. the GooRoo is paid by yoorGooRoo.com I really think it is going to work as people are now familiar with the process of making a video and uploading it to a web site There is a huge untapped market for personal sports tuition from experts, (DVD's, specialist magazines, books or existing "HowTo" websites are NOT "one to one") Also many professionals are familiar with new technology such as video making and editing It is pre launch but recruiting now. Great way to earn extra cash or improve your surfing. They ask that if you want to be a GooRoo you need to understand your sport inside out, be able to teach and have some basic ability to edit a movie using one of the video editing packages available, consumer or professional Oh and they are also running a draw to win an HD video camera if you sign up!
Surfing Mag did a featured story last month on "Why good Surfing Can't Be Taught." I think that the website looks great and it's a wonderful idea for other sports, but with the ridiculous number of variables involved with surfing, I don't think that it would work. In baseball you can stand in the same spot a thousand times and repeat the same drill over and over and over again until you've got whatever you're working on perfected. The same goes for most other sports. Surfing ends up being a whole different animal. Your body goes into a fight or flight response mode and with other sports, your conditioning and repetition make it possible for your body to override these basic instincts. But with surfing, you aren't able to repeat the exact situation enough times to be able to override these instricts generally speaking, and this is why not even the best surf instruction can make you all that much better than you already are. If someone's problem area with surfing were say "staying in the barrel and not getting closed out on", the "Guru" would have to find a wave identical to the one(s) showed in your video and then show himself make the wave and explain what he did different and how you can correct your problem. Did anyone else read that article? Any thoughts?
certain skills have to be learned by experience, but there is always room to learn from someone who is more advanced then you from having them express their knowledge.

Its hit or miss. Surfing techniques can be taught and explained, but without practicing it in the water, you're gonna get no where. It helps to know WHAT to do, just you need to learn HOW to do it yourself.
Surf coaches work Every little competitive grom in Australia has a surf coach instead of a little-league coach. Surf coaches do pretty much what your web idea conveys. Video, critique, advice. Go for it.
