This coming summer my buddy and I are going on our first surf road trip, starting at the beginning of August until classes start or we run out of money, whichever comes first. We are starting in New Jersey and hope to get down to southern Florida. We are trying to avoid hotels and want to camp as much as we can. Anyone know of some good spots with campsites near the breaks? Thanks guys.
do some searches on state and national parks with campgrounds - there are lots including ones in the outer banks and @ sebastion inlet(with mosquitoes the size of small birds) - even a campground right outside of miami beach, not great surf but good for a couple days of fun.
This is a cool idea so totally not hating, but have you considered going north rather than south? If you're from jersey, you've probably surfed primarily beach breaks. Going north will get you point break surf and if you get some early season canes you could score NH, ME, and NS epic. Anyway, just an idea.
OBX camping Roadanthe has a KOA campground. In fact back when I lived there 94-96 KOA campground broke as well as S-turns. IF you can drive 4-wheel drive do it.ONce you have been to Rdoanthe, Salvo Buxton and Frisco you migh make it any further south. WHile in OBX you need to surf S-turns, Rodanthe pier , probably a break in front of the campground, THen pop on the beach in Salvo ride down the beach find your own spot (if the ramps are open to get on the beach) then head down to Buxton, everyone has to surf the Groin at BUxton. Then jump on the beach down there head dsouth on the beach to wehre you hit south facing beach. Great thing is half the beaches face s east, half face south so it catches swell from everywhere. Enjoy.
doing a northern road trip with my wife in late spring. Looking to go to RI, MA, NH, and maybe Maine and/or Long Island. She's against making the whole thing about surfing, so we'll probably get up into White Mountains for a couple days. Since it may still be pretty cold, probably gonna do about 50/50 camping and staying in motels. Anyone have some good motel/campground recommendations near the ocean up there?
I love hearing about stuff like this. I camp often and agree, aim for national and state campgrounds, my experience has been their rates are much more reasonable. No matter where you go. north or south, its gonna be fun.
This was taken in front of the KOA in Rodanthe summer of '09. Leftovers from Bill and precursor to TS Danny. Some others in my gallery.
Carson looks like fun! Rember where at the campground. Anymore i have hard time driving past Sturns to go look anywhere else. Did you stay in the campground ? where did you park to paddle out... PM me if you dont want to give up secrets. Im kind of pissed you showing me that picture though I was stuck in VB for all of Igor
Not a great spot for surfing, but a good little campground at the state beach south of Myrtle beach. Wrightsville beach is a must stop too. If you want to stop in Delaware/OC area, hit me up, be happy to get some turns with you.
I am doing some research on this now . But like mentioned Me and cpl people are going North. Make a Stop in Montunk, and up to RI and Mass or Maine. If you have enough ppl you should rent a RV
cool pic, esp since it's obviously a dude who isn't a spring chicken & who appreciates what the hell he just nailed.......sums up The Stoke in so many ways....
