Recently spent four months in the San Diego area. All I have to say, different world. Different attitude towards surfing, life, culture, work, school, friendliness, etc. For some, its a smooth transition others not so much. Not ripping anything about the area, it really is a beautiful place with great waves. Just not the right place for some individuals I guess. (me being one of them) Anyone else experience this and realize it just wasn't for them?

east coast is better for barrels but is inconsistent. Westcoast has the Pacific Power.

Eastcoast youll find a crowd over waiste high slop, you wont on the west coast, infact most "good" days on the eastcoast alot of westcoasters wouldn't consider surfable. I like them both, but am happy I grew up on the eastcoast and identify as a westcoast surfer more after living there for 2 years simply because you dont have to wait for a small window during a hurricane or the surprise Nor Easter of the century to have something bigger than a 8 foot rippable face .

Its just "different" man. I feel ya though. I enjoy the west coast but the east coast runs through my veins. "Different" isnt necessarily bad. Sounds to me like youre rejecting change. Give it a chance. Hope youll be back out in sd this winter because el nino is ganna be hooking it up!
Ps. Youre right about the east coast providing the best barrels, ecspecially when compared to sd

interesting...I think about leaving NJ all the time after a fun surf, knowing that I could be waiting another 2 weeks to go surfing again. Its a brutal existence, really. I'm surprised people even compare it to out west because you can get just as good barrels out there as you can here, and longer rides. I think what turns me off from it is the crowds at the good spots and what seems to be a lot of people dropping in.

I guess if you base your opinion on west coast to things other than the surf it could be a deal breaker for some.

I like our waves. I just don't feel like a real surfer though when I see how good Ca and Hawaii get. Then I have a good surf session and the slate is wiped clean again.

When I first got to Malibu, the socal fellas all sounded like fruits on fire. But it's just how they talk. The uplifted inflection at he end of the sentence. The slang. The constant attempts to fit the cultural mold out there as happy-happy.

It's not wrong, it's not right, it's just def different from the right coast.

    Best Coast vs. Beast Coast....

San Diego is paradise on earth. Pick. A. Spot.

Ive heard many east coast people say "People on the west coast are so fake, and people on the east coast are a$$holes but at least you know where you stand." I don't get that sentiment?!? I would rather someone who doesn't like me at least be polite to my face.

Yank is right they do talk with a little flavor and it does sound a bit sophomoric to a New Englander. But coming from a subculture of people who are perpetually unhappy with the weather, and who ostensibly spend their lives drinking Dunkin Donuts waiting to die, if the contrast is a man-made dialect which forces stoke upon their words, thats a much better alternative.

Threadstarter: spend some more time in SD. You have to let go of that magnetic north part of your east coast soul and just embrace the 70 degree sunshine and waist high days all to yourself. And if you find you miss the crowds, there is always La Jolla.

I've never found that generalizing, categorizing, or prejudging people based on location, race, religion, etc, accomplishes much of anything that's good. Complaints are more often a reflection of the complainer.
I've lived in a lot of different places and regions in this country. The presence of good folks or a-holes is not geographically dependent.
...Texas is different (just kidding...sort of).

dude so true, new englanders are total ****s that dunkin donuts thing made me laugh so hard. But yea out west people tend to be tools, ill sum it up with driving.

In seattle metro area (washington state for you geographically challenged folks) If you start to pass someone on a two lane highway, they almost always will passive aggressively speed up in the right lane, but never make eye contact and pretend there not. If they are caught in the act, they will almost always wave and give some sort of "my bad" gesture but you know there mumbling some bull**** under their breath.

Up here in new england, if you try to pass someone and there not having it, theyl just cut you off slam on the breaks and stick the finger out the window. It depends what you prefer, but when im out east I always miss the passive aggressive antics over having my life put into actual danger, and out west vice versa.

This example runs into surfing. I feel like your way more likely to get a beat down at some eastcoast spots, generally because of the surplus of people and lack of waves, but people tend to talk more trash and give more cold shoulders in the line up out west. There is one exception tho, Seaside OR. Dont ever go there. Ever, at least not with out of state plates. Not if youd like your car and health to remain in good condition.

The whole westcoast love thing has some truth. I remember the first time i surfed in washington a guy in the parking lot busted me down an 8th of fire for free after I talked to him in the water for 5 mins and told him i just drove straight from the eastcoast. After offering to give him some cash he just said "west coast love man" and drove off. Never saw that dude again. That would never happen to a non-local in south jerz or OBX (maybe cause weeds not legal)

Dad is retired Coast Guard, I got to travel quite a bit. I loved SD! The vibe out there is definitely different, a lot more laid back. The waves also definitely different. I appreciated what each coast had/has to offer and I took advantage of it. SD, warm water, clear water (most of the time),line ups I dealt with were cool, more consistent surf and Roberto's Taco Shop. East Coast, dirty water or cloudy, whatever you want to call it, line ups not bad, but I hear stories of people getting their sheet thrown in the water, less consistent surf and WA WA.

Pretty interesting and true from what I've experienced. Never got free nug after a surf though....

There are pockets of California that I love and some I don't care to go back to. Honestly SD didn't really do it for me. Maybe I didn't surf the right spots but it all seemed like of grimy. For instance, I got a rash on my foot after surfing SD.

I did, however, love north county and south OC. Got a very memorable session just north of San-o sate beach in some big hurricane swell.

Unless were talking like Rincon, Malibu or Trestles I've never surfed anywhere in southern California that was any more crowded than a comparable day on Delmarva. About the same really...

Last fall I surfed 3 foot Swamis all week and it was less crowded than the spots around here are on a decent smallish - medium sized day. Actually amazing how fun small Swamis was on a mini simmons.

On another trip it was firing 6 foot, glassy, warm sunshine with fewer heads in the water than I would expect to see around here when we rarely see such surf.

Comparing East Coast to West Coast is too broad of a spectrum.
North Cal to Southern Cal is entire different world, like comparing NY/NJ to NC or FLA locals on the EC.
I only surfed and spent time in So Cal but I found most people (who were real locals that grew up in So Cal their whole lives (not transplants) really full of themselves, ego-centric, and not very informed about things outside of their little So Cal world (aka dumb).
I found a lot of EC transplants pretending they were real locals, with the same qualities mentioned above.
