Between Rhode Island, Delaware, South East North Carolina and OBX this winter has been firing! Head high + and clean on average at least once a week. Not to mention the i caught some local spots in R.I. that have broken better than they have in 10 years. If your not getting pitted and stoaked this winter, you dont know where to look , or are too lazy to make a trip!

I am poor and don't own a suit thick enough to travel north. I just deal with whatever swell we see in SC.
+1 Best NJ assessment of the winter I've seen. Number of friends have been calling it all time...etc. But seriously...really was only an "ok" winter overall. I think a 5/10 would be fair...
December in Nj had 2 other head high offshore days other than doomsday and 27th. People on this thread are either pessimistic or delusional. Between Jan 31 and the the E swell this week there were 8 swell events with each producing one if not two days of surf, three days in a row on W Long Island for the 'Saturn' swell. These weren't mushy, crowded California waves either... Completely empty top to bottom barreling waves. There were also a disproportionate amount of good days on the weekend which is crucial. I'll take a flat spell in January for that... Best winter ever
Yeah, since ive opened this restaurant, I really dont have time to even get up to Charleston, much less the mid-atlantic.... Planning a long vacation next fall (LAte fall after hurricane season of course) to get outta the South East and get some damn waves. I was tempted to hit the Washout during Sandy, but it was solid 5-7 foot with some barrels down here so why bother to get slightly better surf... It was as good as it gets right here.
Based on this scale, I'd give it a 6.5 If January had even one or two more swells, a solid 7. If January was like February, an 8.
A month later SC is a solid 1. Like 3 days of surf since the new year and none of them insane....pyewk
An interesting number of implications/assumptions in your post...but seriously...your claiming this the "BEST WINTER EVER" by adding an additional 2 days that were head high...2 days?! To be honest, I'm trying to be realistic--definitely some fun sessions though
That was a response to a different post saying that december only had 2 days. Would have been the best winter with or without those two days. Also, not much is being assumed or implyed by listing weather related data in regards to the # of days available to surf. Sam Hammer has quote in an ESM feature that this was the best winter he has seen, i'll go with his opinion as validation.
I really don't see your weather related data but who am I...I just call like I see/surf it. As for the Hammer quote...fits great in the ESM article focusing on February and March--wouldn't say that makes up the entire winter. Consequently, best ever...don't think so...been better winters that had more consistency/quality, etc. from december on. best February and March in the last few years...I could agree with that...
My two cents...having a five week (Dec 27 - Jan 31) gap between decent swells pretty much disqualifies 2012- 2013 from best winter ever candidate, no matter what came later, even tho what came later has been pretty damn good.
Definitely not the best winter ever, but I'd say the quality of the conditions during each swell was well above average. There was some other thread about how January typically stinks anyway, which is mostly true, but by mid-February I didn't care. It's been a good late winter / early spring so far, and given the way some sandbars have improved since Sandy and the storms that followed I'd say that partially makes up for January. 7/10 in NY
