    +1 Peajay, I think we've had a similar discussion a long while back. Some folks are completely off the grid and make money off the power company because they generate more than they use. It's a great concept. More people should do it, would love to do it myself when I buy a house.

    you wouldn't be off the grid. you tie into the grid. the system over produces during the day and then balances out as you draw from the utilty when it isn't working( night time and clouds etc). other wise you have to save what you're not using into batteries which is expensive and really not developed yet for everyday folks. Its called net metering. you're not really making money as much as your not paying out. the money you save by not having to pay an electric bill (here on LI its not uncommon to pay $200 to $500 a month for electricity!) pays off the cost of the system. there is upkeep too. you now own a new power source that needs tune ups just like an HVAC system but in the end its a smart move.
