although this is generally sound thinking it doen't apply to everyone. I never wanted to have kids, I always figured I was too selfish too much of a loner etc. Then my wife and I were surprised by baby boy. All I can say is he is the best thing that ever happened to me and the best thing I have done in my life. Kids will change the way you look at things for the better. It puts everything else into perspective. You won't turn into an angel overnight and there will be set backs, but you will never look at that 12 year old grom at your local break the same way again. Suddenly you will see him as someone elses child, someone that has has parents that are worried about him and that love him more than anything. It will make it harder to be angry when he paddles for a wave you have your heart set on.

Whatever he does tell him not to hire a private yoga instructor to come to his house the second day the baby has been home. Things could potentially get nasty. Just sayin.

Funny I was just talking about this analogy with my wife. And, recently found out we are going from double coverage right to zone defense. Ha!

If you do decide to have kids, don't half-ass it - go all in (you'll both be better for it). For me, it's been absolutely fantastic. I couldn't imagine not having done it.

I agree with Zipster on this one. Before becoming a dad I was completely ambivalent about having kids. I could take em or leave em. My wife too. Now I can't believe I ever considered NOT having kids.

And to return to the orignal point - tell your bud to surf as soon, and as much as possible. Pure and simple, surfing makes me a better husband and dad. If I've caught a few waves in the a.m., I don't CARE what happens the rest of the day and am sooo ready and more patient in dealing with tantrums, flying vomit and the 1.7 millionth reading of Goodnight Moon.

Kids change your outlook on things that is for sure, I have 2 kids now, my boy is 3 1/2 and my daughter is almost 9 months. There was a time I would drop/ditch anything when the swell was good, not anymore.

Going to Assateague with the kids is enough fun for me these days, taking my boy out on the ULI and teaching him how to swim is far more fun than any hurricane swell I have ever surfed. This year I didn't get out to surf once, but I am OK with that, the house and kids come first. In a few years my priorities will change and I will have more free time to get back out and surf, till then I will focus on my family, the beach isn't going anywhere.

Hope everything goes well for your friend and he has a happy healthy baby.

As others have said, surf as much as you can now, once the new addition has arrived, you'll be swamped w/ new duties (to say the least). As they get older, you'll get more time. My wife and I have a going-on 2 yr old daughter and a boy on the way this March. No zone defense for me, gonna get snipped. Enjoy them while they're young bc it does go by fast. The best things my daughter has said so far is "Daddy's gotta go surfing" and "Wanna go surfing w/ Dada." As for when to get them in the water, I plan on slowly introducing her this summer.

Having kids gives a whole new meaning to the word stoked.

Congrats to everyone who has recently had one and/or has one on the way.

Congrats to MIS and nynj. You're still in Hawaii? I think that would make having a kid way easier.

Do stay sharp, but don't be dismayed when they run circles around you anyway. It's inevitable.
    Congrats!
