The worst is when a good swell hits on a weekend, mayhem. The only defense then is to paddle out at 5am, get your 2 hours of surfing in before the -ahem- massholes and Canadians plug up the break for good. On a side note, what's the derogatory term for NH surfers who plug up the Mass or Maine breaks? Or are NH surfers just generally cool.
I like busting on NY and I have friends who bust on NJ too. I'm not a fan of these hipsters though. They have been causing issues in Rockaway for a while now too. http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/queens/influx-hipster-surfers-rockaway-article-1.1175914
Some of the best juice to be had are the days when it's on shore and sloppy. Nobody out and very make-able sections with nice inside bowls. Save the offshore for a dawn patrol and get your fill before the kooks and the blow out.
No one likes the smug, "im an artist" trustfarian hipster... but that being said you cant judge a book by it's cover. Beards, 5-fin boards... it's all relative. Rockaway and LB aren't the only places to surf, the further east you go the nicer the scenery and less hipsters. Unless you go to "The End"... there you will find wonderful landscapes and hipsters galore (pending on time of year, but not really)
xgen - I know you're an OC guy, I'm confused as to what crowds this time of year? Maybe at a particular spot? I go to a few spots that are rarely if ever crowded in the same town. There's a lot of spots out there, you know this. As for the newbies out there, I've definitely seen more school-age kids out mid-day when I'm sure they have classes to attend. That's the only differences I've seen this year, maybe because I don't surf mid-town with the cam-watchers.
That guy on the captioned photo for "dropping in" is not dropping in, unless he surfs backwards... I think that's an attempt at a duck diving to get out of the way. I know it's a problem, but they could have found an actual dropper, dropper shoulder hopper...
Guilty as charged... I stay out of the water all winter. I live inland, snowboarding is 1.3 hours away, the ocean is 3+ hours away. I'm old, bald, ride a longboard (most of the time), and sit outside and wait for the big ones. I'm no "pro" by any stretch of the imagination, but I can hold my own in practically anything this coast can throw at me. ...but I let plenty of waves go by, and will smile, say hello and chat with you, I won't drop in on you, and I'll do my damndest to stay out of your way when paddling back out. Hope you'll do the same for me. Flip the perspective a bit. You locals get to catch the swell whenever it happens, let me have a few waves when I get the opportunity? I promise not to bother you again all next winter!
like... its hard surfing with an axe bro... most NY'ers arent fans of them types either. be easy. btw if you think the city smelt like piss thats only cause Newark and SuckinCock NJ.. err hackensack.. are wiffing on us from close proximity. kinda like sitting next to a sweaty fat fock on the bus - you end up smelling by association. we got montauqé and rooftop gardens with pools my son. we got the choppers Arnold dreams about getting to, we got rats size of small children yes but they are homeslices so its cool.
