Who just saw Mick Fanning's very close encounter with that shark in the J Bay final? Holy ****e. That would scare me out of the water for I don't know how long.

They just called it off for at least the day. He is so lucky, only broke his leash.

THat was incredible. Called off for the day.

Mick is the man. Fought off two sharks. I think he broke his leash trying to choke one out.

WSL going to get massive media attention for this... They say any press is good press. That was the most outrageous thing i've seen in any live event

This is probably a bit big to be a bull, probably a great white. I went cage diving last summer in Cape Town and this is currently smack in the middle of the great white high season

Holy crap! That has to be e clearest image of a shark attack on a surfer ever taken. What strikes me is how quiet and how fast it could have all been over if it had actually gotten a hold of him. Taken down as quickly as I can swat a fly, then over.

how long until various news sources pick this story up and start talking about the "major shark problem" going on. Funny how understanding everyone on the webcast is of the dangers of the ocean, and not once do they speak of a shark problem.

So happy we didnt lose another fellow waterman today.

Yum-Yum yellow is what they say.... I believe it too.... I never wear anything yellow in the water.... the only thing yellow is that useless little yellow donut on my leash to keep it from tangling.... which does not help at all.

when the story first came out there was no headline that he was being attacked. to me it looked like mick was in the middle of the shark trying to eat a fish. Also, those fins look really long and thin... almost like a hammerhead.

That's the tail not the dorsal. The dorsal came up right before that.

thats the tail fin,not the dorsal, they said it was a juvenile great white, probably around 8 ft or so.crazy shyt man happy micks alright hes one of my favorites.but hearing the interview,it sounds like the shark got tangled up in micks leash, that's why he was pulled underwater,i don't think the shark was trying to eat him,but it was swimming by and got caught in his leash and tried to swim away pulling mick along with him.

and this is not the first shark encounter at jbay contest.in 2005 an Australian who isn't on tour anymore, cant remember his name, got brushed by a 10 footer.they got it on youtube somewhere, but it was no where near how micks shark brush went,it didn't come out the water.happy for mick,he said hes happy if he doesn't even compete anymore, dont know whats going to happen with him.sucks it was the final too lol.
